CBI Team Visits RG Kar Hospital in Rape-Murder Case

Kolkata: A six-member team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrived at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday morning, two weeks before the Sealdah Court is scheduled to hear the R G Kar rape and murder case. The team visited multiple locations within the hospital and is expected to question several key witnesses who have not yet been interviewed.

Last week, West Bengal Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee announced that the state had reopened files related to the rape-murder incident at R G Kar Medical College. On Monday, the CBI team reached the hospital around 11:30 am and proceeded to the Platinum Jubilee Building, which houses the administrative block.

After a brief interaction with officials, the team moved to the Emergency Building, where the body of a second-year postgraduate trainee (PGT) was discovered in a third-floor seminar room on August 9, 2024. Sources indicated that the CBI team also visited the seventh-floor room that has remained sealed since the incident.

Earlier, several doctors' organizations and individual doctors had reported the discovery of surgical knives, scissors, blood stains on the wall, and blood-stained gloves in this room, located opposite the orthopaedic operation theatre. Former principal Sandip Ghosh, who is currently in CBI custody, was associated with the orthopaedic department. Many had called for a thorough investigation of this room, suspecting it could be the primary crime scene. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay had also demanded an inspection of the room.

Sources said the CBI team spent nearly an hour in the room. The victim's mother stated, "The team has spoken to us. We hope the investigation will now proceed. Earlier, the CBI couldn't find those responsible for tampering with evidence. The answer lies in finding out why her body was cremated so hurriedly."

Amartya De, the lawyer representing the parents, said, "The rape-murder case will be heard by the end of this month. In the last hearing, we demanded the CBI's status report on the case. We also demanded the arrest of former Panihati MLA Nirmal Ghosh and others in connection with the case."
