Ranchi is witnessing an unprecedented travel frenzy as thousands of devotees scramble to reach their hometowns in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming Chhath Puja celebrations. The massive exodus has created chaotic scenes at major bus stands across the city.
Ticket Prices Skyrocket Amid High Demand
With demand far outstripping supply, bus ticket prices have seen a dramatic surge, leaving many travelers frustrated. Passengers are reporting fare increases of up to 50-100% on popular routes to Patna, Gaya, Varanasi, and other destinations in the two states.
"I usually pay ₹800-900 for a ticket to Patna, but today I had to pay ₹1,500," complained one distressed traveler at the Hatia bus stand. "There are no options – either pay the inflated price or miss celebrating Chhath with our families."
Overcrowding Reaches Alarming Levels
The situation at bus terminals has become increasingly chaotic, with overcrowded buses becoming the norm rather than the exception. Long queues, frantic passengers, and overloaded vehicles have become common sights.
- Buses are departing with standing passengers despite safety regulations
- Families with children and elderly members are facing extreme discomfort
- Limited additional buses have been deployed to handle the extra demand
- Many travelers are being forced to wait for hours without confirmed seats
Authorities Under Fire for Poor Planning
The transport department and private operators are facing severe criticism for their failure to anticipate and manage the annual festival rush. Despite Chhath Puja being a major annual event that draws thousands of migrants back to their home states, adequate arrangements appear to be lacking.
"This happens every year during major festivals," noted a regular traveler. "The authorities know this rush is coming, yet they never make proper arrangements. People are forced to travel in dangerous conditions and pay exorbitant prices."
Alternative Travel Options Also Strained
The travel crunch isn't limited to buses alone. Trains operating on these routes are running at full capacity, with waiting lists running into hundreds. Private vehicle owners are also reporting heavy traffic on major highways connecting Jharkhand with Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
As the Chhath Puja festival approaches, the travel situation is expected to worsen, with peak departure days still ahead. The festival, dedicated to the Sun God, is particularly significant for people from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, making the journey home non-negotiable for many despite the travel hardships.
