Chennai Witnesses Huge Pongal Migration
Chennai and its surrounding areas have experienced a massive departure of residents ahead of the Pongal festival. Since last Friday, close to 14 lakh people have left the city to celebrate in their native districts. They used various modes of transport including government buses, private buses, and trains.
Early Exodus Eases Traffic Flow
Transport officials noted that the exodus started early this year. Many residents decided to leave before the official holiday period to avoid the worst of the congestion. This proactive movement helped maintain largely smooth traffic on the GST Road. Despite the heavy volume of vehicles, major arteries remained manageable for most travelers.
Breakdown of Passenger Numbers
Official sources provided detailed figures for the travel period from Friday to Tuesday. Approximately 6.5 lakh passengers opted for government-operated buses. Private buses carried nearly three lakh people during the same timeframe. Trains from Chennai accommodated around five lakh passengers. A considerable number also traveled using private vehicles such as cars and two-wheelers, though exact counts for these are not specified.
Localized Congestion Issues
While overall traffic flow was smooth, some areas faced significant congestion. Key trouble spots included the Kilambakkam bus terminus, Vandalur, and Chengalpet. In these locations, vehicular movement slowed considerably due to the high volume of outbound traffic. Additional congestion occurred in Koyambedu and Thiruvanmiyur, primarily caused by private buses departing the city.

Police officials have ramped up security and traffic management efforts. They deployed extra personnel to regulate the flow of vehicles and ensure safety. These intensified arrangements aim to handle the festive rush effectively and minimize disruptions for travelers.
