Nearly a decade after its grand opening, the Chandigarh International Airport continues to operate without a basic public Flight Information Display System (FIDS), causing ongoing frustration for travelers and those receiving them.
A Decade-Long Wait for Basic Information
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Chandigarh International Airport in 2015, promoting it as a modern aviation hub meeting international standards. However, after 10 years of operations, the airport still does not have functional FIDS screens in crucial public areas. These include arrival and departure gates and the outdoor waiting zones.
This absence means that people waiting for passengers have no direct access to real-time flight statuses, accurate arrival times, or updates on delays. They are forced to rely on personal smartphones or repeatedly question airport staff.
Passenger Frustration and Winter Woes
The missing facility has drawn surprise and anger from visitors. R K Dutta, who came to receive his son, expressed his shock. "There was no display board showing arriving flights," he said. "People were constantly checking their phones or asking security personnel. An international airport claiming high standards should at least provide basic flight information to the public."
The problem intensifies dramatically during the winter fog season. When multiple flights face delays, diversions, or cancellations, relatives often end up waiting for hours in confusion. They are left clueless about whether a flight has landed, is delayed, or is cancelled, leading to unnecessary overcrowding at terminal entry points.
Airport Management's Response and Promises
When confronted about the issue, Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL) Chief Executive Officer Ajay Kumar acknowledged the shortcoming. He stated that corrective measures are in the pipeline.
"We are in the process of installing a new, state-of-the-art flight information display system at all required locations," Kumar said. "The tender process is currently underway. Once it is approved and allotted, the system will be installed."
While this assurance has been provided, passengers and daily visitors remain hopeful that this long-pending amenity will be implemented without further delays. They await the day when the airport's public facilities truly align with its proclaimed international stature.
