Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department Proposes Mini Cruise Services to Boost Coastal Tourism
The Andhra Pradesh tourism department is actively working to significantly enhance sea-based leisure activities for tourists by proposing the introduction of mini cruise services along the picturesque coastline. In a strategic move to boost coastal tourism, the department has formally requested the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) to operate these mini cruises, which are designed to accommodate approximately 80 passengers per vessel.
Formal Request and Technical Feasibility Assessment
Tourism Secretary Ajay Jain has officially written to the port authorities, seeking a comprehensive assessment of the technical feasibility and obtaining all necessary permissions required to operate the proposed services. This initiative comes against the backdrop of the Central government's substantial investment two years ago, when it constructed a state-of-the-art cruise terminal at a cost of Rs 100 crore within the port premises.
Despite this significant infrastructure development, cruise tourism in the region has remained largely limited, with only an annual visit by a major cruise liner operating on the Chennai–Visakhapatnam–Puducherry–Chennai route. Previous discussions among the tourism department, various travel operators, and port authorities have yielded little tangible progress in expanding cruise tourism opportunities.
Proposed Routes and Night Stay Experience
The tourism department has now specifically sought permission to utilize the existing cruise terminal for these proposed mini cruises. Several exciting routes are currently in the pipeline, including Vizag–Bheemili–Vizag, Vizag–Srikakulam, and Vizag–Vizianagaram, which would offer tourists unique coastal experiences.
In addition to the mini cruise services, the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) is planning to introduce an innovative 'Night Stay at Sea in Yacht' experience. This ambitious project would offer overnight accommodation on specially equipped yachts, complete with tourist amenities, providing visitors with a truly unique and memorable sea tourism experience.
Implementation Timeline and Technical Assessment
APTDC officer Jagadeesh revealed that the department had initially sent a detailed proposal to the port authorities approximately five months ago. "Technical feasibility is the crucial first step to operate mini cruises effectively," he explained. "The port possesses the necessary expertise to conduct this assessment thoroughly. The entire project will be initiated once we obtain the feasibility clearance from the port authorities."
The proposed mini cruise services represent a significant step forward in diversifying tourism offerings in Andhra Pradesh, potentially transforming the coastal tourism landscape and providing tourists with new, exciting ways to experience the region's beautiful coastline.
