Two international Air India flights bound for the United Kingdom were forced to change their landing plans on Sunday after encountering severe weather conditions at their scheduled airports. The flights, originating from Mumbai and Amritsar, were both diverted to London Gatwick Airport as a safety precaution.
Flight AI131's Unplanned Detour
The Mumbai-London Heathrow service, operating as flight AI131, faced significant disruptions. The aircraft was initially placed in a holding pattern over its destination due to the continuing inclement weather. After assessing the situation, the flight crew made the decision to divert the plane to the alternate airport, London Gatwick.
Following standard operating procedures for such scenarios, the pilot requested and was granted priority for landing. The aircraft subsequently made a safe landing at Gatwick. Air India officials confirmed that all necessary assistance was promptly provided to the passengers upon arrival.
Amritsar-Birmingham Flight Also Affected
In a similar incident, Air India flight AI117, which had departed from Amritsar with Birmingham as its final destination, was also unable to land as planned. This flight too was forced to hold in the air before the crew opted for a diversion.
The flight was redirected to London, joining the diverted Mumbai service. The dual diversions highlighted the widespread nature of the adverse weather systems affecting parts of the UK that day.
Air India's Response and Passenger Safety
An Air India spokesperson addressed the incidents, emphasizing that passenger safety is the airline's top priority. The diversions were carried out in strict adherence to established safety protocols designed for such unforeseen circumstances.
The spokesperson further stated that the airline's ground teams extended all required support to the affected travelers. This included providing information, rebooking assistance, and other necessary services to help passengers manage the disruption to their travel plans. The airline's procedures ensured that both landings were conducted smoothly and without incident.
