Leela Palaces Acquires Ultra-Luxury Resort in Coorg, Marking Entry into Nature-Led Hospitality

NEW DELHI: In a significant expansion move, Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts announced on Tuesday the acquisition of an ultra-luxury resort in Coorg. This strategic acquisition marks the brand's formal entry into immersive, nature-led, and wellness-anchored hospitality experiences.

Details of the Coorg Property

The newly acquired property is a 71 all-villa resort set within 76 acres of lush landscape near Madikeri in Coorg. Scheduled to open later this year as The Leela Coorg Forest Sanctuary, this resort represents a new direction for the luxury hotel chain.

The property benefits from significant land reserves that support thoughtful densification, with plans for a first phase adding 19 keys to bring the total inventory to 91 villas. This expansion will enhance the resort's capacity while maintaining its immersive natural setting.

With the addition of the Coorg property, The Leela portfolio now comprises 15 properties with over 4,160 keys across 13 cities globally. The portfolio includes:

  • 7 owned properties
  • 7 managed properties
  • 1 franchised hotel

The brand has an ambitious growth strategy with 9 hotels currently in the pipeline, positioning Leela Palaces to expand to 24 properties over the next three years. Key growth markets include:

  1. Agra
  2. Ayodhya
  3. Bandhavgarh
  4. Mumbai
  5. Ranthambore
  6. Sikkim
  7. Srinagar
  8. Jaisalmer

Leadership Perspective on the Acquisition

Anuraag Bhatnagar, CEO of The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts, commented on the strategic importance of this acquisition: "As we celebrate 40 Years of The Leela, this acquisition represents both a milestone and an evolution of the brand into nature-immersive, wellness-focused hospitality."

Bhatnagar elaborated on the company's investment philosophy: "We invest in destinations with cultural and ecological value, and Coorg strengthens our presence in South India while advancing our strategy of building a balanced portfolio across India's most iconic landscapes."

He further described the unique value proposition of the new property: "The Leela Coorg Forest Sanctuary offers a rare synthesis of wilderness, wellness and warmth of true Indian luxury for travellers who seek space, stillness and a genuine connection to nature."

Strategic Significance and Market Positioning

This acquisition represents a strategic shift for Leela Palaces toward nature-immersive hospitality experiences. The Coorg property's focus on wellness and ecological integration aligns with growing consumer demand for sustainable luxury travel experiences that offer genuine connections with natural environments.

The expansion into Coorg strengthens Leela's presence in South India and complements its existing portfolio of urban and resort properties. The company's balanced approach to portfolio development across India's diverse landscapes positions it well to capture multiple segments of the luxury travel market.

With this acquisition and the planned expansion to 24 properties over the next three years, Leela Palaces demonstrates a clear commitment to growth while maintaining its focus on destinations with significant cultural and ecological value.
