The government of Uttar Pradesh has launched an ambitious initiative to give global branding to the state's rich and diverse culinary heritage. Under the newly introduced 'Ek Janpad Ek Vyanjan' (One District One Cuisine) scheme, one distinctive dish will be identified from each of the state's districts. The government plans to actively promote and connect these selected culinary specialties to the international market, aiming to elevate Uttar Pradesh's food culture on a worldwide stage.

Prayagraj's Iconic Dishes Lead the Race

In the historic Sangam City of Prayagraj, two legendary snacks are emerging as frontrunners for this prestigious designation. Netram's kachori and Hari's samosas are currently leading the competition to become the district's signature offering under the scheme. This initiative is expected to provide Prayagraj's beloved food items with a fresh, modern identity while preserving their traditional roots.

Historic Legacy of Prayagraj's Contenders

Hari's samosas have been delighting residents in the Loknath neighborhood since 1890. Originally started by Hariram Purwar, the establishment is now managed by the third generation of the Purwar family. Arvind Purwar of Hari & Sons explains that their 'chhota masala' samosas are uniquely small, fried in pure desi ghee, which imparts a distinctive flavor and remarkably extends their shelf-life to fifteen days.

Equally historic is Netram's kachori from Katra Square, a snacking staple that has maintained its popularity since 1854. Remarkably, neither its 168-year-old flavor profile nor the loyalty of its patrons has diminished over time. Mukesh Agarwal, who continues this culinary tradition, asserts that the delicious taste and unwavering purity of their product present the strongest case for selection under the 'One District, One Cuisine' program.

Comprehensive Government Strategy and Funding

The scheme was formally launched as part of the state budget, with the government allocating a substantial Rs 75 crore for its implementation. Beyond mere promotion, the strategy involves developing dedicated culinary streets in every major city and town across Uttar Pradesh. These food hubs will serve as vibrant showcases for local gastronomy.
