Sri Aurobindo Institute of Culture Marks Golden Jubilee of Aspiration Festival
The Sri Aurobindo Institute of Culture in Kolkata recently celebrated a significant milestone—the golden jubilee of its renowned Aspiration festival. This 10-day cultural extravaganza culminated in a spectacular musical event titled Sinfonietta, which paid homage to the legendary composer Ananda Shankar.
Student and Alumni Collaboration Brings Music to Life
Approximately 30 students from classes 6 to 11 at The Future Foundation School took center stage at the open-air venue. These young performers, trained from an early age by the school, collaborated with culturally inclined alumni to breathe life into Ananda Shankar's compositions. The ensemble showcased an impressive array of instruments, including traditional Indian ones like the sitar, sarod, tabla, ghatam, and harmonium, as well as Western instruments such as the piano, violin, electric guitar, mandolin, bass guitar, and Spanish and acoustic guitars. Additional percussion instruments like the cajon, drums, and djembe, along with a synthesizer and mouth organ, added depth to the performance. The event concluded with a moving vocalists' segment, leaving the audience captivated.
Dignitaries and Praise for the Performance
The audience included notable dignitaries, such as Amal Sircar and his wife, Bithi Sircar, along with their son, Indronil Sircar, who serves as the global CTO for manufacturing and mobility at Microsoft Corporation and is a close associate of the school. Also in attendance were Pratip Kar, a managing trustee of The Future Foundation School, and Mitali Sinha, Ananda Shankar's sister-in-law. Principal Ranjan Mitter lauded the performance, describing it as "excellent" and commending the dedication of all involved.
Curated by Alumnus and Teacher Rakesh Choudhury
The event was meticulously curated and coordinated by Rakesh Choudhury, an alumnus and teacher at the school, who is also an accomplished sitar player. Choudhury ensured that Sinfonietta not only celebrated Ananda Shankar's music but also embodied his philosophical ideals, creating a seamless blend of tradition and innovation.
Reflections on the Event's Impact
Headmistress Suchandra Laha highlighted that the true essence of the performance lay in the performers' complete immersion in their craft, which she noted as the standout feature of the evening. In its execution, Sinfonietta transcended being merely a tribute; it evolved into an immersive experience of harmony, intent, and nurtured talent. The event left an indelible mark on all present, with its final notes fading into an unforgettable memory of artistic excellence.
This celebration not only honored 50 years of the Aspiration festival but also reinforced the institute's commitment to fostering cultural heritage and talent in Kolkata, making it a landmark occasion in the city's artistic calendar.
