President's Republic Day Invitation Celebrates Northeast Craftsmanship
President Droupadi Murmu's special invitation for the 77th Republic Day celebrations puts the spotlight on traditional crafts from India's northeastern states. The 'At Home' reception invitation features exquisite handcrafted items that represent the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Bamboo and Cane Take Center Stage
The invitation box itself showcases Tripura's traditional weaving techniques. Artisans crafted the container using woven bamboo mats, a skill passed down through generations. Inside, guests will find delicate cane and bamboo jewellery from Tripura, demonstrating the living tradition of bamboo craftsmanship in the state.
Eight States, Countless Traditions
The invitation celebrates what officials call the Ashtalakshmi - the eight northeastern states. Each state contributes unique handicrafts:
- Manipur presents its famous Longpi black pottery
- Arunachal Pradesh offers Mon Shugu paper products
- Meghalaya contributes green bamboo weave items
- Sikkim provides woven nettle fabric with traditional embroidery
- Nagaland shares orange wild rhea and stinging nettle products
- Mizoram includes handwoven Puan Chei textiles
A senior official explained that this collaborative effort between artisans and the project team highlights the vibrant living traditions of northeast India.
Eri Silk Stoles Welcome Guests
Attendees at the Republic Day reception will receive a special welcome. Officials will drape a beautifully designed Eri silk stole over each guest's shoulders. These stoles incorporate symbols representing the region's diverse flora and fauna.
The Eri silk, often called 'peace silk' or 'Ahimsa silk,' holds significant cultural and economic importance in the northeast. Its production supports local communities while preserving traditional textile techniques.
Carefully Curated Presentation
The invitation package includes several thoughtfully designed elements. A decorative wall-hanging panel represents northeastern heritage, fitting neatly inside the bamboo mat box. A finely woven scroll features an octagonal bamboo design that, when unfolded, reveals an artistic arrangement of handcrafted pieces.
This presentation allows each craft to shine while demonstrating how different traditions complement one another. The invitation card itself highlights traditional crafts from all eight northeastern states - Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.
Through this specially designed invitation, the Republic Day celebrations honor the skilled artisans who keep these traditions alive. Their craftsmanship tells the story of northeast India's cultural diversity and artistic excellence.
