Pune's Weekend Poetry Renaissance: Cafés, Community & Cultural Connection

On a typical weekend in Pune, a quiet transformation unfolds in cozy cafés across the city. Microphones are adjusted, notebooks are flipped open, and audiences settle in with anticipation. What began as a niche interest has blossomed into a reliable weekend ritual, offering Pune residents an alternative to the monotonous home-to-office cycle.

Finding Escape and Connection Through Verse

For many participants, these poetry gatherings represent both escape and genuine human connection. Arista Engineer, a 28-year-old teacher, initially sought "things to do outside of the usual grind" but discovered something more profound. "What I found was a space that felt simply welcoming," she explains, noting this rare quality keeps bringing people back weekend after weekend.

The sense of openness defines the poetry event experience. "In communities such as Baithak & Beyond, I found poetry presented as an art form that provides something for everyone," Arista elaborates. "The art of listening and being listened to is kept alive, nurtured and celebrated here." Over multiple weekends, she has witnessed first-time writers, seasoned poets, and quiet listeners gradually finding their voices.

The Growing Appeal of Weekend Poetry Communities

Organizers believe this sense of belonging drives the rising popularity of Pune's poetry scene. Sonali Rasal, poet and organizer for The Corinthians Literati and Baithak And Beyond, observes: "Many participants come from different parts of the country for education or jobs. Not only do they make lifelong friendships in these gatherings, they also represent the language and culture of their home places."

Simran Khurana, organizer for Tape a Tale, identifies what makes weekend poetry events special: "Listening to someone talking about an experience you have had in words you did not think gives one a new window to the world. The sense of camaraderie helps people get away from the regular 9-5." Interestingly, the culture has evolved—more attendees now come simply to listen, making Pune's weekend poetry scene as much about audiences as performers.

Transformation Through Creative Expression

At their core, these spaces facilitate personal transformation. Arista recalls once apologizing for writing only in English. Today, after numerous weekends at poetry events, she writes in multiple languages and introduces her work with confidence. "Sometimes, you just need someone to believe in you a little more than you yourself do," she reflects.

For others, the appeal lies in artistic exchange. Software engineer and author Roopal Nema describes these gatherings as "safe spaces" where art meets honest feedback. "We found bond," she says. "A bond that connects Art to Artists and Artists to Audiences at Social, Emotional and Cultural levels." She emphasizes these communities function as support systems rather than competitions.

Cafés as Cultural Hubs

Venues play a crucial role in shaping this weekend culture. At Kitabi Chai café, owner Geetika Anand started open mics to give new voices a platform. These events have attracted a younger, creative crowd who return not just for coffee but for connection. "First-time performers are often very skeptical," she notes. "But after spending time in the ambience and getting comfortable with the space, they usually feel happy and confident to perform. In the end, it's just the first line, the first poem, that truly requires courage."

Beyond Weekend Entertainment

What distinguishes these gatherings is their lasting impact. Unlike films or plays, poetry lingers—participants carry lines, emotions, and sometimes friendships beyond the weekend. As communities expand from cafés into gardens, public spaces, and city landmarks, they're becoming integral to Pune's cultural voice.

In a city renowned for literature and arts, poetry is quietly claiming its place as a thoughtful, intimate, and increasingly popular weekend getaway. Arista observes: "I have watched listeners become readers, I have watched the most well-read critics be awed by an amateur's line or fresh take on a metaphor. I have even witnessed a proposal because the couple first met at a poetry event!"

Simran Khurana adds: "When I meet people from other cities, it feels good to hear how they find the Pune audience very supportive. The concept of 'third-space' that is now taking steam has kind of been here a long time, in this way."

Despite challenges—including Pune's transient population and limited weekends—organizers continue innovating. Sonali Rasal notes: "People in Pune are constantly moving in and out for education and work, so building a steady audience is always a challenge. With more poetry groups emerging and only a few weekends each month, timing becomes crucial. While audiences enjoy familiar formats, they're also seeking fresh experiences, making curation a creative balancing act."

As Pune's weekend poetry scene flourishes, it demonstrates how artistic communities can foster connection, confidence, and cultural richness in urban life.
