Cuttack Residents Protest Exclusion of Madhusudan Das from Odia Pakhya Posters
The Madhusudan Culture Association, in collaboration with residents of Satyabhamapur village, has formally lodged a complaint with the district collector and the state culture department. This action was taken on Monday, with the groups strongly condemning the Odisha government's decision to exclude Madhusudan Das from the official posters released for the ongoing Odia Pakhya celebrations. They have labeled this omission as a grave insult to Odia Asmita, or Odia identity.
Odia Pakhya Celebrations and the Controversy
The state government is currently observing Odia Pakhya, a cultural festival that spans from Odisha Day on April 1 to the Odia New Year, Maha Vishuba Sankranti, on April 14. This period is dedicated to honoring the rich heritage and traditions of Odisha. However, the association has raised serious allegations, stating that ignoring Madhusudan Das—who is widely regarded as the architect of modern Odisha—represents a significant lapse by the government during a festival meant to celebrate the state's legacy.
Village Outrage and Historical Significance
Villagers from Satyabhamapur, the birthplace of Madhusudan Das, have joined the protest, expressing strong resentment over the exclusion. Their involvement underscores the deep emotional and historical connection to the leader, who played a pivotal role in shaping Odisha's development and identity. The complaint highlights how this oversight not only disrespects a key historical figure but also undermines the festival's purpose of promoting Odia culture.
Government Response and Broader Implications
Despite repeated attempts to seek clarification, Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj remained unavailable for comment, leaving the government's stance unclear. This lack of response has fueled further speculation and concern among cultural activists and local communities. The protest raises broader questions about how historical figures are commemorated in state-sponsored events and the potential impact on cultural pride and awareness.
The incident has sparked discussions on social media and within cultural circles, with many calling for immediate rectification and greater sensitivity in future government initiatives. As Odia Pakhya continues, the controversy serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusive representation in celebrating heritage.
