Mysuru's Nanjangud Witnesses Grand Gautama Pancha Maharathotsava Procession
On Monday, the historic town of Nanjangud in Mysuru district came alive with spiritual fervor as lakhs of devotees gathered to witness the magnificent Gautama Pancha Maharathotsava. This grand event formed a central part of the annual 'Dodda Jathre' festival at the revered Srikanteshwara temple, drawing participants from across the region.
Sacred Rituals and Traditional Commencement
The sacred ceremonies began precisely at midnight under the expert guidance of chief priest J Nagachandra Dikshit. During the highly auspicious timing of Meena Lagna, which occurred between 5:50 am and 6:30 am, the idol of Lord Srikanteshwara was ceremoniously installed upon the majestic Srimanmahu Gautama chariot.
Nanjangud MLA Darshan Dhruvanarayana formally initiated the chariot procession by performing traditional puja rituals and breaking coconuts near the wheels. As the ceremony unfolded, devotees who had been eagerly awaiting this moment enthusiastically pulled the massive chariot forward while groups of energetic youths danced joyfully to the rhythmic beats of traditional drums, creating an electrifying and vibrant atmosphere throughout the streets.
Spectacular Procession and Devotional Display
Thousands of devotees lined both sides of the chariot street and gathered atop buildings to catch a glimpse of the beautifully decorated Gautama chariot carrying the sacred idol. The chariot itself was a masterpiece of traditional craftsmanship, adorned with:
- Colorful fabrics in vibrant hues
- Elaborate floral decorations spelling 'Nanjundeshwara Rathotsava'
- Fresh flowers arranged in intricate patterns
The procession followed a meticulously planned traditional sequence:
- The Ganapathi chariot leading the way

The Gautama chariot completed its sacred circuit and returned to its original position within approximately one and a half hours, followed closely by the Parvati chariot. The entire five-chariot procession captivated devotees for nearly four hours, with the Pancha Maha Rathotsava serving as the main highlight of the festival.
Engineering Marvel and Safety Precautions
The centerpiece of the celebration was the majestic Gautama chariot, an engineering marvel standing nearly 90 feet tall and weighing approximately 205 tons. This massive structure was beautifully decorated with vibrant fabrics and fresh flowers specifically for the grand procession.
MLA Darshan Dhruvanarayan emphasized the significance of the event, stating: "The preparation for this big event started two months ago. Every year, the number of devotees is increasing. Keeping this in mind, we ensure to take more precautions to handle the crowd."
Authorities implemented extensive safety measures to ensure the well-being of all participants:
- Heavy earth-moving machines and emergency vehicles accompanied the procession
- Fire engines and a crane were strategically positioned
- A hydraulic wire vehicle provided additional support
- Electricity supply was temporarily disconnected in nearby areas
- Drone cameras monitored the entire festival to prevent incidents
