The 12th edition of Manipur's premier cultural showcase, the Sangai Festival, drew to a vibrant close on Sunday. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla presided over the closing ceremony, extending heartfelt gratitude to all contributors for ensuring the event's success despite facing certain challenges during its ten-day run.
A Celebration of Resilience and Cultural Pride
In his address, Governor Bhalla emphasized that the festival's spirit of unity, resilience, and cultural pride remained unshaken throughout. He commended the proactive efforts of the state government in promoting Manipur's tourism profile both nationally and internationally. The governor specifically pointed to major infrastructure projects like the upcoming ropeway as key drivers for future growth.
This flagship festival witnessed robust participation from tourism stakeholders across India. Governor Bhalla thanked prominent associations including the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), North East India Tourism Confederation (NEITC), and Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) for their role in making the concurrent 3rd Manipur Tourism Congress a triumph.
Highlights: From Dance to Cinema and Sports
The cultural segment received immense appreciation. The governor lauded the opening-day performance by students of the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, describing their devotion to Manipuri dance as truly inspiring. The closing ceremony was graced by students of the Government Dance College, whose presentation added depth and elegance to the finale.
Artistic creativity was on full display across various venues. A significant highlight was the Sangai Film Festival 2025, which screened 28 films across four curated categories, aligning with the mission to nurture cinema and inspire emerging filmmakers.
Sports formed a major pillar of the festivities. The Manipur Polo International Tournament featured five teams: USA, Colombia, Indian Polo Association, India B (Manipur), and Chhattisgarh. In a thrilling final at Mapal Kangjeibung, India B (Manipur) defeated Colombia 8–5 to claim victory. The Sagol Kangjei Cup at Kangla saw fierce competition among 21 clubs, with X Polo Club emerging as champions.
Adding to the athletic fervor, the Sangai Run attracted 1,500 participants. Traditional Manipuri sports like Kang, Mukna Kangjei, Mukna, and Yubi Lakpi were also showcased at Khuman Lampak, drawing enthusiastic crowds.
