In a significant step towards the grand spiritual congregation, the authorities of the Magh Mela in Prayagraj commenced the crucial land allocation process for the upcoming tent city on Tuesday. This follows the traditional Ganga pujan, marking the official start of preparations for the 44-day annual religious fair.
Sacred Timeline and Initial Allocations
The Magh Mela is scheduled to begin on January 3, 2026, and will culminate on February 15, 2026. The land allocation exercise, a pivotal part of the mela's organization, was initiated on the banks of the Ganga. Honouring a long-standing tradition, the first plots of land were allocated to saints from the Dandi Nagar or Dandi Bada section on the opening day.
This initial phase of distribution for the Dandi saints will continue until December 4. The process follows a meticulously planned schedule. Subsequently, on December 5 and 6, land will be provided to groups from Acharya Nagar. This will be followed by allocations for Khakchauk saints, which are set to take place from December 7 to 9.
Traditional Commencement and Official Plans
Mela officials confirmed that it is a customary practice to allocate land to the Dandi Sanyasis first for every Magh Mela. Prior to the formal start of the land allocation work, a bhoomi pujan (ground-breaking ceremony) was performed by prominent seers. The ceremony was led by Peethadheeshwar Swami Vimaldev Ashram, the national president of the Dandi Sanyasi Management Committee, and Peethadheeshwar Swami Brahmashram Maharaj, the national president of the Dandi Sanyasi Parishad. They were joined by general secretary Swami Shankar Ashram and other Dandi Sanyasis.
Regarding the remaining allocations, mela authorities stated that the dates for issuing land and facility slips for all other institutions, except the three groups mentioned, will be announced separately. This phased approach ensures a smooth and organized setup for the massive temporary city that accommodates millions of pilgrims and ascetics.
Gearing Up for a Spiritual Spectacle
The commencement of land allocation signals the transition from planning to active implementation for the Magh Mela 2026. The creation of the tent city is a monumental logistical task, transforming the sandy banks of the Ganga into a fully functional township with sectors, roads, and essential utilities. This process is deeply rooted in tradition, respecting the hierarchical and spiritual order of the various akharas and religious groups that participate.
With the key dates now in motion, devotees and religious organizations can begin their preparations for the 44-day spiritual observance. The Magh Mela, a smaller version of the Kumbh Mela but equally significant, is a cornerstone of Hindu pilgrimage, drawing sadhus, saints, and seekers from across the country to Prayagraj for sacred baths and rituals.
