The world of postage stamps came alive in Ludhiana as a vibrant district-level philatelic exhibition opened its doors at the Dr Manmohan Singh Auditorium within Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). This two-day event, meticulously organized by the department of posts, presents a captivating journey through postal history, drawing enthusiasts and curious minds alike.
A Grand Showcase of Philatelic Treasures
The exhibition boasts an impressive and diverse collection, featuring 81 frames of philatelic material contributed by 41 dedicated philatelists. The inauguration ceremony was transformed into a festive occasion with schoolchildren performing colorful cultural dances that beautifully reflected Punjab's rich traditions. Officially inaugurating the event, PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Satbir Singh Gosal also released a special cover titled 'Sutlej-Pex-2025' to mark the occasion.
In his address, Dr Gosal praised the department of posts for its innovative initiative. He emphasized that such events strengthen the bond between the postal service and the public through modern technology while simultaneously promoting the educational hobby of philately among students. He specifically commended Senior Superintendent of Post Offices (SSPO) for Ludhiana city division, Balbir Singh, for the successful organization of the exhibition and for introducing the popular 'My Stamp' feature. This unique service allows individuals to get their own photographs printed on postal stamps, adding a personal touch to the traditional art form.
Spreading the Philatelic Passion
SSPO Balbir Singh highlighted the core mission of the exhibition: to spark and spread interest in stamp collection across India and the globe. He pointed out that the display includes ancient and rare stamps from various countries, offering visitors a unique window into the evolution of communication and postal systems over the centuries. Yashpal Bangia, President of the Ludhiana Philately Club, added his voice, lauding the department's efforts. He urged students to cultivate the habit of collecting stamps and rare items, noting that it serves as a tangible and engaging method to preserve cultural and historical heritage.
Engaging the Younger Generation
Recognizing the importance of nurturing interest early, the event incorporated significant educational components. As part of the initiative, PAU hosted essay writing and stamp design competitions specifically for school students. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with more than 250 students participating actively in these creative activities. This enthusiastic participation clearly reflects a growing and renewed interest in philately among the younger generation, moving beyond the digital realm.
