Lucknow Churches Commemorate Maundy Thursday with Solemn Observances
Churches throughout Lucknow conducted Holy Communion services on Maundy Thursday, solemnly marking the biblical event when Jesus Christ shared the Last Supper with his disciples prior to his Crucifixion on Good Friday. The observances featured traditional rituals, heartfelt sermons, and musical tributes across multiple congregations in the city.
Messages of Gratitude and Service at Assembly of Believers Churches
At the Assembly of Believers Church in Daliganj, the congregation received an exhortation to practice gratitude and selfless service. Priest in charge Parag Wesley delivered a powerful message emphasizing thankfulness and societal contribution. "People should remain thankful to God for what they have received and just as Jesus dedicated himself to the world, be willing to contribute towards the betterment of society," Wesley stated during his sermon.
Meanwhile, at the Assembly of Believers Church in Aliganj, the service commenced with devotional hymns. Senior priest in charge Morris Kumar explained the significance of the occasion, noting "Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of Triduum, the three sacred days commemorating Christ's passion, death and resurrection."
Traditional Foot Washing Ceremony at St Joseph's Cathedral
One of the most poignant rituals occurred at St Joseph's Cathedral, where Bishop Gerald John Mathias performed the traditional foot washing ceremony during the Holy Eucharist. The bishop washed the feet of twelve church members, reenacting Jesus' humble act of washing his disciples' feet.
Donald D'Souza, spokesperson of the Catholic Diocese of Lucknow, clarified the ritual's profound meaning: "The foot washing was conducted to remember how Jesus washed the feet of his twelve disciples, reflecting humility and unconditional love for his people."
Musical Tributes and Sermons at Epiphany Church
At Epiphany Church in Lalbagh, a twenty-five-member choir enhanced the service with melodic hymns including ‘Aye sur jo aluda' and ‘Hayat ki roti de'. Priest in charge Frank Baksh delivered an insightful sermon focusing on baptism and the importance of leading an authentic Christian life.
The diverse observances across Lucknow's churches highlighted:
- The universal Christian commemoration of Jesus' final teachings and actions
- The emphasis on humility, service, and gratitude in Christian practice
- The musical and ritual traditions that enrich Maundy Thursday services
- The connection between historical biblical events and contemporary faith practices
These Maundy Thursday services collectively prepared worshippers for the solemn observances of Good Friday and the joyful celebration of Easter Sunday, creating a meaningful spiritual journey through the holiest days of the Christian calendar.
