Kolkata's Easter: A Tapestry of Faith, Family, and Evolving Traditions
Easter in Kolkata unfolds as a deeply personal celebration, where the warmth of faith intertwines seamlessly with the intimacy of family bonds. From time-honoured rituals to evolving customs, the festival is marked by moments of prayer, indulgence, and heartfelt connection across the city's Christian communities.
Layered Celebrations: Faith and Family Intertwined
We engaged with four Christian families in Kolkata to capture the unique rhythms they bring to Easter. For Sreeparna Mandal, the festival has grown richer with meaning since the birth of her daughter Samaira. "Easter has become exceptionally special for us," Sreeparna reveals. At its core, it revolves around togetherness and devotion. "It's about bonding and praying together as a family," she emphasizes.
The culmination of Lent adds profound significance to their home celebrations. Sreeparna shares that her food-loving daughter finds giving up something for Lent challenging yet manages it beautifully, making the subsequent festive lunch a highly anticipated event.
Gratitude and Nostalgic Indulgence
For Melissa Alford Naidu, Easter balances spiritual reflection with family-centric gestures. "Easter reminds me of the ultimate sacrifice and inspires my own small sacrifices for family and friends," she explains. Beyond its spiritual depth, the day is steeped in warmth, nostalgia, and indulgence. "It also means abundant chocolate and family fun," Melissa adds.
Her fondest memories trace back to her late grandfather, who lovingly prepared Easter lunches while playfully attempting to skip mass. "His food was always the most delicious," she recalls with affection.
Playful Traditions and Culinary Signatures
Alice and Neville Koyithara cherish Easter for its quiet, reassuring rhythm of togetherness—gathering around the table, catching up, and enjoying each other's company. However, when their children were younger, the day buzzed with playful energy. "The biggest highlight was the treasure hunt," Alice says, describing how clues hidden in the house and garden led to treats and laughter.
"An Easter cake is also a staple at our house," she notes, referring to a cream-based cake that has become a signature part of their festive spread.
Reflection and Multigenerational Gatherings
For Jason Aaron, Easter is a time of reflection and togetherness, anchored by rituals that blend faith and family. "Easter represents hope, fresh beginnings, and quality family time. It's a reminder to be grateful and celebrate love," Jason states. Central to his celebrations is attending church with his mother and aunt.
His childhood memories are filled with bustling family gatherings featuring over ten cousins from his mother's side, all exchanging gifts and eagerly opening Easter eggs. "It's a big family affair we never miss," he affirms.
Carrying Forward the Essence of Easter
Melissa highlights the communal aspect: "My mother cooks traditional dishes, and we all gather to catch up. My husband probably looks forward to the Easter lunch the most." Neville Koyithara underscores the importance of tradition: "Traditions only have meaning if they're carried forward. The younger generation must understand what Easter stands for, preserving its essence over time."
Through these personal stories, Easter in Kolkata emerges as a vibrant celebration where faith and family create a unique, evolving tapestry of devotion and connection.
