Kolkata Book Fair Unites Russia and Ukraine Through Literature; Argentina Theme Nation
Kolkata Book Fair Brings Russia, Ukraine Together

Kolkata Book Fair Creates Historic Moment for Russia and Ukraine

The 49th International Kolkata Book Fair opens its doors this Thursday at Salt Lake Central Park ground. This year's edition promises a remarkable display of literary diplomacy. For the first time in the fair's history, Ukraine will participate alongside Russia. These two nations remain locked in a bitter conflict that has raged for four years.

"Books are, after all, the world's most genuine friend," remarked one of the event organizers. The fair aims to provide a peaceful platform for cultural exchange. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to explore Ukrainian art and literature right here in Kolkata.

Argentina Takes Center Stage as Theme Nation

Argentina has been named the theme country for this year's book fair. The choice resonates deeply with Bengal's legendary passion for football. Argentina is the homeland of global icons Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona.

The theme pavilion will showcase a vibrant blue-and-white color scheme. Organizers are modeling two of the fair's nine gates after ancient Argentine architecture. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to inaugurate the event. Argentina's Ambassador to India, Mariano Caucino, and noted literary figure Gustavo Canzobre are expected to attend.

Wide International Participation and Notable Absences

The fair will host literature from a total of twenty countries. Participants include Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Peru, and Nepal. Several other Latin American nations will also join the event.

Australia returns to the fair after missing the last edition. However, two regular participants will be absent this year. The fair will not feature pavilions for Bangladesh or the United States. The United States served as the theme country back in 2011.

The fairground is expected to be awash in various shades of blue. This reflects the prominent blue elements in the national flags of Argentina, Russia, and Ukraine.

Focus on Cultural Exchange and Literary Dialogue

One organizer emphasized the fair's core mission. "We want all the countries to mingle at the book fair," they said. The goal is to increase the exchange of books, culture, and ideas among nations.

The 49th International Kolkata Book Fair will run from January 22 to February 3, 2026. It continues its tradition as the world's largest non-trade book fair. The event underscores the power of literature to bridge divides and foster global understanding.
