Kolkata Book Fair 2026 Introduces Commuter-Friendly Features
The International Kolkata Book Fair returns this year with several new conveniences for visitors. Organizers have announced three major additions designed to make transportation smoother for everyone attending the event.
Enhanced Metro and Cab Facilities
Metro authorities will operate extra services on the Green Line between Sector V and Howrah stations throughout the fair's twelve-day run. The fair opens on January 22 and continues until February 3.
For the first time, visitors can purchase metro tickets directly at a special booth located on the fairgrounds. This dedicated booth sits between Gate 1 and Gate 2. People can pay using UPI and then proceed to Central Park station, bypassing the usual ticket counter queues.
App cab users will find a designated pick-up zone established outside Gate 1. This organized area should help reduce congestion and make exiting the fair more efficient.
Record Footfall Expected
Publishers and Booksellers Guild general secretary Tridib Chatterjee expressed confidence about this year's attendance. He noted the venue now enjoys direct metro connectivity from Howrah to Karunamoyee and Central Park.
"We requested increased metro frequency, and authorities agreed," Chatterjee stated. "The last train from Sector V will depart around 10 pm on all fair days."
Last year's event attracted 27 lakh visitors and generated sales worth Rs 23 crore. Organizers anticipate even greater numbers this year.
Fair Details and International Participation
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate the 49th International Kolkata Book Fair on January 22 at the Salt Lake Central Park fairground. The event features over 1,000 participants from approximately 20 countries.
Argentina serves as the focal theme country for the first time. Two of the nine entry and exit gates will showcase Argentine architectural themes.
An Android app specifically for IKBF 2026 will help visitors navigate the fairgrounds using Google Maps. QR codes placed at entry points will open a digital ground map containing the complete participants' list.
Bangladesh, however, will not participate for the second consecutive year, marking a notable absence among international exhibitors.
