Admirers of the legendary English novelist Jane Austen came together globally on Tuesday to honour her 250th birth anniversary. The day was marked by a series of events, both physical and virtual, celebrating the life and works of the author of timeless classics like "Pride and Prejudice" and "Sense and Sensibility."
Celebrations at Jane Austen's Historic Home
The focal point of the festivities was Jane Austen’s House in Chawton, southern England. This cottage, where Austen spent the final years of her life and penned all six of her completed novels, is now a museum. On December 16, marking exactly 250 years since her birth in 1775, the house hosted special talks, guided tours, and live performances for dozens of visitors.
Lizzie Dunford, the Director of Jane Austen’s House, reflected on the yearlong celebrations. "It has been an absolute joy to spend 2025 celebrating the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth. It has been a year filled with laughter, love, community and inspiration," she said, adding a hopeful toast: "Here’s to the next 250 years."
A Global Virtual Gathering for Janeites
The celebrations concluded with a unique online party designed for international fans. Organisers encouraged attendees to don Regency-era attire for the Zoom event, which saw registrations from over 500 enthusiasts in far-flung nations including Chile, Kazakhstan, and Belarus. This virtual party allowed the global community of "Janeites"—as ardent fans are known—to participate from afar.
Earlier in the day, a special church service featuring music and readings was held in Steventon, the rural Hampshire village where Jane Austen was born. This added a solemn and reflective note to the jubilant anniversary.
A Year of Regency Festivities Across the World
The birthday itself capped off a full year of global tributes. Devotees across the UK, the United States, and other countries have commemorated the milestone with period-themed Regency balls and festivals. Just over the weekend, the city of Bath—where Austen once lived for five years—hosted the Yuletide Jane Austen Birthday Ball. This event served as the grand finale to a series of elaborate costumed gatherings held in the city throughout the anniversary year.
The widespread and heartfelt celebrations underscore the enduring and cross-cultural appeal of Jane Austen's sharp wit, social commentary, and unforgettable characters.
