The golden sands of Chandrabhaga Beach in Odisha have once again transformed into a magnificent canvas for global creativity. The 15th edition of the International Sand Art Festival officially opened its doors to the public on Monday, December 2, 2025. This prestigious event is being held a mere two kilometres from the iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Konark Sun Temple, creating a powerful dialogue between ancient stone architecture and ephemeral sand art.
A Global Gathering of Masters
Organised by the Department of Tourism, Government of Odisha, the festival serves as a premier platform for artistic exchange. This year, it brings together a diverse cohort of around 140 talented artists from across India and the world. International participation includes master sculptors from countries such as Spain, Portugal, Japan, Sri Lanka, and Russia, alongside artists from various Indian states. The festival is spearheaded by the guidance of celebrated Padma Shri awardee Sand Artist Sudarsan Pattnaik.
Themes and Temporary Masterpieces
Running for five days until December 5, the festival is not just a competition but a celebration of ideas. Artists will craft their mesmerising sculptures based on daily themes that resonate with contemporary issues, including environmental awareness, women's empowerment, and cultural pride. Visitors are granted a unique opportunity to witness the entire creative process, from the first mound of sand to the final, intricate detail. Despite their temporary nature, these sculptures, born from skilled hands, are designed to leave a lasting impression on all who see them.
A Dual Cultural Feast
The sand art extravaganza is strategically timed to coincide with the 36th Konark Festival, offering a rich dual experience for culture enthusiasts. While the days are dedicated to sand sculpting on the beach, the evenings come alive with classical performances at the nearby open-air auditorium as part of the Konark Dance Festival. From 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm daily, acclaimed maestros present breathtaking performances of various Indian classical dance forms.
The primary aims of the International Sand Art Festival are multifaceted: to promote tourism in Odisha, celebrate the exquisite artistry of sand sculpting, and foster a global community where artists can share techniques and inspirations. By blending global perspectives with local Odia flair, the event creates a vibrant and unforgettable tapestry of artistic expression on the shores of Chandrabhaga.
