In a significant move to boost heritage tourism, Odisha's Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida conducted a detailed review of the master plan for the development of the ancient Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves on Wednesday. The focus of the review was a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing visitor experience and preserving the integrity of these Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)-protected Jain monuments.
Key Components of the Heritage Development Plan
During the assessment, the Deputy CM examined the planned interventions which are designed to transform the area around the twin hills. The project's cornerstone is improving public amenities, accessibility, and interpretation facilities to help tourists better understand the site's historical significance. A major goal is to achieve a seamless urban integration for these heritage sites, making them a more central part of Bhubaneswar's cultural landscape.
The blueprint includes several critical infrastructure upgrades. These feature an organised parking system and the creation of landscaped plazas to manage crowds and provide green spaces. A signature arrival plaza is planned, which will house comprehensive tourist facilitation and interpretation centres. Perhaps one of the most visitor-friendly components is the proposal for a dedicated, safe pedestrian link that will physically and experientially connect the Khandagiri and Udayagiri cave complexes.
Enhancing the Visitor Journey and Approach
Beyond the immediate site, the plan also encompasses improvements to the major approach roads. Streetscape and public realm enhancements are on the agenda to ensure the journey to the heritage site is pleasant and sets the right tone for the historical exploration ahead. This holistic approach covers everything from the moment a tourist arrives in the vicinity to their movement between the caves and their overall engagement with the monuments.
The review underscores the state government's commitment to developing its rich historical assets in a sustainable and visitor-centric manner. By upgrading amenities and creating better interpretive frameworks, the authorities aim to make the profound history of these Jain rock-cut shelters more accessible to both domestic and international tourists. The successful implementation of this plan is expected to elevate Bhubaneswar's status as a premier heritage destination in Eastern India.
