Netaji Museum in Cuttack to Open Philately Gallery on His 128th Birth Anniversary
The Netaji Birthplace Museum at Odia Bazaar in Cuttack is preparing to launch a dedicated philately gallery. This special gallery will open its doors on January 23. The date marks the 128th birth anniversary of the iconic freedom fighter, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
Vice-president of India, CP Radhakrishnan, will officially inaugurate the gallery. The event promises to be a significant moment for the city and for admirers of Netaji across the nation.
A Tribute Through Stamps and Covers
The Department of Posts has issued numerous postage stamps and related items over the decades to honor Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. These philatelic materials serve as a powerful tribute to his crucial role in India's fight for independence. They commemorate key milestones from his remarkable life.
The new gallery will occupy the first floor of the museum building. It will showcase an impressive collection of old and rare commemorative postage stamps. Visitors will also see various philatelic materials. These include first day covers, special covers, and picture postcards released by the postal department.
Reflecting Netaji's Life and Legacy
Devjani Bhuyan, Deputy Director of the Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department and Secretary of the Netaji Birth Place Museum, explained the gallery's significance. She stated that the exhibits reflect Netaji's birth, his early upbringing, and his vital contributions to the independence movement.
The collection also highlights his leadership in founding the Indian National Army (INA), Bhuyan added. It showcases his powerful call for courage, patriotism, and selfless dedication. This call inspired millions to rise against British colonial rule.
Bhuyan further noted that several items in the collection are considered to be of great historical and philatelic rarity. This makes the gallery a unique repository of national heritage.
An Educational Resource for Visitors
Additional District Magistrate Ipsita Mishra emphasized the educational value of the new facility. She said the philately gallery will help visitors, especially students and researchers, understand Netaji's legacy through a unique medium.
Each stamp and cover tells a story of his vision, bravery, and sacrifice, Mishra remarked. She called it a proud moment for Cuttack to host such a facility on his birth anniversary. The gallery will provide a tangible connection to history for younger generations.
Final Preparations Underway
Preparations for the inaugural event are now in their final stages. Museum officials have upgraded display systems, lighting, and security arrangements to ensure a world-class experience. Special commemorative covers are also likely to be released during the inauguration ceremony.
Officials believe this initiative will further strengthen heritage tourism in Cuttack, often called the Millennium City. The gallery aims to offer visitors a comprehensive glimpse into the life, contributions, and enduring legacy of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. It transforms historical artifacts into a narrative of national pride.
