The Syro-Malabar Church has issued a strong condemnation and protest against a controversial artwork displayed in connection with the Kochi Muziris Biennale, which it alleges depicts the Last Supper in a derogatory and distorted manner. The Church asserts that the piece, exhibited on Mattancherry Bazaar Road, violates the basic respect for religious beliefs held sacred by millions of Christians.
Church Statement and Allegations of Deliberate Insult
In an official statement released on Tuesday, the Church clarified its position. It stated unequivocally that while artistic freedom is a cornerstone of a democratic society, it cannot be used to justify presentations that mock religious beliefs and hurt the sentiments of believers. The Church emphasized that the fundamental principle of a pluralistic society is that freedom of expression must be exercised with responsibility and mutual respect.
The Church raised a significant point of contention: this specific artwork was previously published in the December 2016 issue of a Malayalam magazine and was withdrawn following opposition from the Christian community. Its re-exhibition at the biennale-linked event has led the Church to suspect a deliberate act intended to insult the Christian faith.
Police Complaint and Community Action
The protest has moved beyond statements. The Kerala Latin Catholic Association (KLCA) committee of the Kochi diocese has formally lodged a complaint with the Kochi police regarding the artwork. Sources within the KLCA stated that the biennale should not become a platform for displaying offensive content under the guise of art.
They expressed suspicions that the display was a deliberate attempt to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of Fort Kochi, which was bustling with New Year celebrations, and to tarnish the festive spirit. Consequently, the association has requested the district collector to intervene in the matter. Complaints have also been filed with the Mattancherry assistant police commissioner and the local police inspector, urging them to take action for the removal of the controversial piece.
Biennale's Response and the Path Forward
In the midst of this controversy, sources associated with the Kochi Muziris Biennale indicated that a discussion with the opposing group is likely to be scheduled in the coming days, once the New Year celebrations conclude. This suggests an openness to dialogue to address the concerns raised.
The Church, in its statement, urged the concerned authorities to seriously consider the deep hurt felt by the Christian community. It stressed that cultural spaces, which ought to be platforms for healthy dialogue and genuine artistic expression, must not be turned into venues for targeting and dividing any religious group. The Church expressed hope that the authorities would take just and responsible actions to resolve the issue.
