Thousands of people across Kashmir participated in International Yoga Day celebrations on June 21, 2026, with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha addressing a large gathering in Srinagar. The event, organized at multiple locations across the valley, saw enthusiastic participation from students, government officials, and members of the public.
LG Sinha highlights yoga's relevance
Addressing the gathering, Sinha highlighted the growing relevance of yoga in modern life and described it as a pathway to holistic health and well-being. He emphasized that yoga is not just physical exercise but a means to achieve mental peace and spiritual growth. "Yoga connects the body, mind, and soul, and its practice is essential in today's stressful world," Sinha said.
Mass participation across the valley
Celebrations were held in various districts including Anantnag, Baramulla, Pulwama, and Kupwara, with local administration organizing sessions in schools, parks, and community centers. In Srinagar, the main event at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) saw over 5,000 participants performing asanas and breathing exercises. Similar events in other districts drew hundreds each, with total participation estimated at over 20,000 across Kashmir.
Yoga as a unifying force
Officials noted that the day's events promoted unity and wellness, with participants from diverse backgrounds joining together. The theme for 2026 was "Yoga for Humanity," focusing on the role of yoga in fostering global harmony and health. The celebrations concluded with a collective meditation session, underscoring the message of peace and well-being.
