For 36-year-old Rachna Singh from Ranchi, a typical morning transformed into a harrowing ordeal when she awoke pinned to her bed, immobilized by agonizing neck pain. What she initially attributed to poor sleeping posture was later diagnosed as a severe case of cervical distress, directly caused by prolonged hours hunched over her laptop for work.

Youth and Professionals Equally Affected

Singh's distressing experience is far from isolated in the city. Medical professionals are observing a significant surge in health complications stemming from increased screen exposure, impacting both the working population and younger generations. Orthopaedic clinics are witnessing an influx of patients with conditions directly tied to digital device overuse.

In a parallel case, 17-year-old Ansh recently visited an orthopaedic specialist after experiencing sharp, stabbing pain in his right thumb. The diagnosis revealed "texting thumb" or tendonitis, a direct consequence of excessive mobile phone usage. Surgeons report their outpatient departments are now regularly treating patients as young as 13 years old, all presenting with screen-related musculoskeletal issues.

Medical Experts Sound the Alarm

Dr. Ekansh Debuka, an orthopaedic surgeon practicing in Ranchi, confirms he treats six to seven such cases daily. "Among younger patients, the most frequent complaints involve thumb and wrist problems," he explained. "Continuous scrolling leads to tendonitis and De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, which is a painful inflammation of tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. This is often combined with cervical issues from maintaining awkward positions while using mobile devices."

For working professionals, Dr. Debuka identifies slouching and poor ergonomic setups as primary culprits affecting the neck and lower back regions. He emphasizes that these conditions are largely preventable through posture correction and simple adjustments like using ergonomic chairs, wireless keyboards, and properly positioned screens.

Preventive Measures and Parental Guidance

Dr. Vinay Prabhat from Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) reports receiving 10-12 patients daily with cervical and lumbar problems linked to prolonged screen time, often without the patients recognizing the connection. He highlights an alarming trend: reduced outdoor activity among children who spend excessive time on smartphones is leading to decreased bone mineral density, potentially hampering their physical development.

"Parents need to be more vigilant," Dr. Prabhat urged. "Instead of handing phones to children to keep them occupied, they should encourage participation in outdoor sports, which is crucial for healthy physical development."

Practical Solutions and Lifestyle Changes

Both doctors recommend straightforward interventions to mitigate these health risks. Using well-supported chairs, maintaining upright sitting postures, and taking regular breaks every 30-45 minutes can significantly alleviate symptoms. Dr. Prabhat adds, "Back extension exercises and isometric neck exercises are beneficial. Additionally, incorporating calcium and vitamin supplements along with consuming dairy products, green leafy vegetables, and cottage cheese helps strengthen bones."

Dr. Debuka concludes with a crucial reminder: "As physicians, we can prescribe medications to manage symptoms, but lasting improvement depends on individuals taking proactive corrective actions regarding their screen habits and ergonomics."
