In a remarkable display of dedication, Raghu MG, a primary school teacher at Karnataka Public School (KPS) in Hosmar, Karkala, has personally funded a borewell project to tackle the school's chronic water scarcity. The teacher, who teaches social science, has already invested Rs 1.5 lakh to drill an 820-feet-deep borewell on the campus. According to Nagesh, the senior headmaster, an additional Rs 1.5 lakh will be required to install the remaining infrastructure to make the facility operational.
Teacher's Initiative and Family Support
Raghu, originally from Tumakuru, has been serving at the school for two years. Headmaster Nagesh expressed surprise when Raghu volunteered to sponsor the project during discussions about the water shortage. The existing well fails to meet demand during peak summer, forcing the school to rely on neighboring sources. Nagesh highlighted the support Raghu received from his family: his parents encouraged him and even offered to fund another borewell if water was insufficient, while his wife, a high school teacher in Balehonnur, also backed the initiative.
Addressing Water Scarcity
The school faces severe water shortages every March and April. Raghu emphasized that most students come from economically weaker families, and the project aims to provide better facilities and attract more enrollments. Future plans include creating percolation pits and implementing rainwater harvesting to recharge groundwater and ensure a sustainable water source.
Additionally, a group called Artha undertook painting the school this year, contributing to its improvement.
