SHRC Orders Probe Into Water Supply Disruption in Kochi

The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), chaired by Justice Alexander Thomas, has called for an immediate resolution to complaints regarding the disruption of clean water supply in several areas under the Chakkaraparamba division of the Kochi Corporation. The affected localities include Vennala, Madapat Road, Maithri Road, Kuttikkad Lane, AKG Library Road, Souharda Nagar, Haritha Road, Shanthi Nagar, and Kaniyaveli Road.

Commission Directs KWA to Investigate

The SHRC has issued a directive to the Executive Engineer of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) to address the issue promptly. As per the order, an Assistant Executive Engineer must be assigned to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The commission has also instructed that the concerned corporation councillor be heard during the inquiry. The investigating officer is required to identify the reasons for the interruption in drinking water supply and submit a comprehensive report to the Executive Engineer within a month.

Personal Appearance Ordered

In a significant move, the SHRC has ordered the KWA Assistant Executive Engineer to appear in person at a sitting scheduled for July 14 at the PWD Rest House in Pathadipalam. The official must present all relevant facts and findings before the commission during this hearing.

Suo Motu Action Based on Media Reports

The commission took suo motu cognizance of the water supply disruption based on media reports. The order underscores the SHRC's commitment to ensuring the fundamental right to clean drinking water for residents. The commission has warned of further action if the KWA fails to comply with the directives within the stipulated timeframe.
