MCD Ramps Up Food Safety Inspections After Ahmedabad Dosa Batter Incident
In response to the tragic deaths of two minor girls in Ahmedabad's Chandkheda area, which are allegedly connected to the consumption of readymade dosa batter, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has significantly heightened its scrutiny of food safety and regulatory compliance across the national capital. This move aims to prevent similar incidents and ensure public health security.
Ahmedabad Tragedy Sparks Nationwide Concern
The Ahmedabad incident, which resulted in the deaths of a three-month-old infant and her four-year-old sister, with their parents hospitalised, has raised serious alarms about the safety of ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook food products. While the family has attributed the tragedy to contaminated batter sourced from a local dairy, police are investigating all possible angles, noting that the infant could not have consumed the food. Authorities are currently awaiting viscera reports to determine the exact cause of death, adding to the urgency of the situation.
MCD's Proactive Measures in Delhi
Against this backdrop, MCD's public health department has intensified its focus on eating establishments in Delhi. Officials conducted a review on Tuesday, examining food safety protocols, licensing requirements, and overall compliance. A senior MCD official confirmed that all zonal district health officers (DHOs) have been instructed to submit detailed status reports on eateries operating without mandatory fire safety clearances. This includes prominent chains and establishments that have obtained stay orders from the Delhi High Court against coercive actions.
The DHOs are also presenting updates on health trade licences issued during the 2025-26 period, alongside a comprehensive review of FSSAI registration, health trade policies, and enforcement guidelines. Discussions extended to the status of licensed and unlicensed spas across various zones, with a particular emphasis on the growing concern of food adulteration and its broader public health implications—a topic that has gained heightened urgency following the Ahmedabad episode.

"There is no need for panic. This appears to be an isolated incident, but we do not want such a situation to arise in Delhi. As a precaution, additional checks and monitoring are being carried out to ensure public safety," the senior official told TOI. He further added, "Field teams have been asked to remain extra vigilant. We are strengthening enforcement and compliance mechanisms so that citizens can feel assured about the safety standards being maintained."
These measures underscore MCD's commitment to proactive governance and public welfare, aiming to restore confidence in food safety standards amidst rising concerns over adulteration and regulatory lapses.
