Mangaluru Health Department to Convene Fresh Food Safety Meetings After NITK Surathkal Incidents

The district health department in Mangaluru is preparing to organize new awareness meetings with stakeholders responsible for managing hostel facilities across the district. This initiative comes in direct response to recent reports of food poisoning cases at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) Surathkal campus.

Recurring Incidents Raise Food Safety Concerns

Sources from educational institutions have confirmed that incidents of suspected food poisoning continue to be reported in various hostels throughout the district. Small groups of students are occasionally falling ill, with most cases described as mild in nature. However, the persistent recurrence of such incidents has significantly heightened concerns regarding food safety standards and the effectiveness of existing enforcement mechanisms.

Health officials acknowledged that awareness drives were previously conducted whenever cases were reported. Despite repeated advisories and educational efforts, instances of food poisoning have continued to surface, indicating a need for more comprehensive intervention strategies.

Institutional Responses and Student Behavior Patterns

The head of an allied health sciences college that experienced a food poisoning episode several years ago revealed that their institution had implemented substantial changes following the incident. "We replaced our mess contractor entirely and established much stricter monitoring measures to prevent any recurrence," the official stated. Interestingly, the official also noted an important observation: "We have found that in several cases, students who complained of food poisoning had actually eaten outside the campus during weekends or holidays."

Seasonal Factors and Departmental Action Plan

District Health Officer Dr. HR Thimmaiah highlighted that food poisoning cases typically increase during the summer months due to higher temperatures and improper food handling practices. "The department will soon hold a meeting to reiterate responsibilities and compliance requirements for all hostel managements," Dr. Thimmaiah confirmed. He further explained that during a previous phase of back-to-back incidents, affidavits were obtained from hostel managements to ensure adherence to safety norms, a measure that may be revisited.

Existing Regulatory Framework and Committee Requirements

In 2024, the district administration had already directed hostel managements and college heads to establish committees comprising hostel residents. These committees are mandated to meet every month and submit detailed proceedings to the district health and family welfare department. Hostels were specifically instructed to strictly follow all health department guidelines, communicate these requirements clearly to committee members, and submit affidavits of compliance within three days of receiving directives.

The upcoming awareness meetings represent the latest effort to strengthen this regulatory framework and ensure that food safety remains a top priority for all educational institutions hosting students in residential facilities.
