Kerala High UV Index: KSDMA Issues Public Advisory

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) issued a public advisory on Sunday following the detection of high ultraviolet (UV) index levels across the state over the past 24 hours.

According to data released by the KSDMA, UV index levels exceeding 8, categorized as an orange alert, were recorded in Kottarakkara (Kollam), Konni (Pathanamthitta), Chengannur (Alappuzha), Changanassery (Kottayam), and Munnar (Idukki).

Additionally, a yellow alert, indicating a UV index of 6 to 7, was observed in Kalamassery (Ernakulam), Thrithala (Palakkad), Ponnani (Malappuram), and Mananthavady (Wayanad).

Health Risks and Precautions

The KSDMA cautioned that prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause sunburn, skin disorders, eye problems, and other health issues. The authority stated, "High UV index levels are generally recorded between 10 am and 3 pm, and people have been advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight for long durations during this period."

Special caution has been urged for outdoor workers, fishermen engaged in marine and inland fishing, water transport workers, bike riders, tourists, individuals with skin diseases, those with albinism, people with eye ailments, cancer patients, and those with weakened immune systems.

Recommended Protective Measures

The KSDMA advised people to use hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses when going out during the day, and to wear cotton clothing that fully covers the body. It also recommended resting in shaded areas during breaks while traveling or engaging in outdoor activities.

The advisory highlighted that UV index levels are typically higher in high-altitude and tropical regions, and that clear skies without cloud cover can further increase UV exposure. Areas near water bodies and sandy surfaces may experience higher UV intensity due to the reflection of ultraviolet rays.

Real-time UV index data from 14 monitoring stations established by the KSDMA is available online, the authority added.
