Cuttack's Friends Colony Confronts Escalating Sanitation Emergency
Friends Colony in Cuttack is currently embroiled in a deepening sanitation crisis, with mounting piles of garbage being openly dumped by workers from the Cuttack Municipal Corporation. This alarming situation has sparked widespread concerns over inadequate waste management protocols and the potential public health repercussions for the local community.
Residents Voice Frustration Over Unhygienic Conditions
Large accumulations of mixed waste, including plastic materials, food scraps, and general household refuse, are visibly scattered along the roadside. This unsightly mess has attracted numerous stray animals, such as cows and dogs, exacerbating the problem. Soumendu Pani, a concerned resident, expressed his dismay, stating, "We are forced to endure this intolerable stench on a daily basis. The most vulnerable, including children and the elderly, are suffering the most, yet there appears to be a complete lack of accountability from the authorities."
Pani further added, "It is shocking that the authorities themselves are contributing to this dumping. Despite our repeated complaints, no one seems to be taking the matter seriously." Another local, Chandan Singh, highlighted that sanitation workers have been routinely discarding collected garbage at this spot instead of transporting it to designated disposal sites. "This negligent practice has persisted for weeks without any long-term resolution from the civic bodies," Singh remarked.
Mayor Responds with Promises of Action
When questioned about the issue, Cuttack Mayor Subhash Singh acknowledged the complaints. "We have taken note of the situation, and I have instructed the relevant sanitation officials to immediately clear the accumulated garbage. Furthermore, we will ensure that all waste is transported exclusively to authorized dumping yards. Strict disciplinary measures will be enforced against any worker found violating these norms," the mayor assured.
Critical Situation Near Community Toilet
The sanitation crisis is particularly severe in the vicinity of the community toilet located in Thoria Sahi, within Friends Colony. Here, garbage has been dumped directly beside the public facility, creating an environment that is nearly unbearable for residents and passers-by alike. Alok Mohapatra, a resident of Thoria Sahi, described the scene, "The foul odor from decomposing waste, combined with sewage from the toilet area, has resulted in extremely unhygienic conditions. People are compelled to cover their faces when traversing this stretch."
Mohapatra emphasized the health risks, noting, "This area has transformed into a breeding ground for flies, mosquitoes, and stray animals, posing serious health threats. It has become challenging to use the community toilet or even walk along the road safely."
Expert Warns of Broader Dangers
Subrat Behera, a retired professor from SCB Medical College and Hospital and a local resident, raised additional concerns. "The open dumping is not merely an eyesore; it is hazardous. Stray animals disperse the waste across the road, creating traffic obstructions and heightening the risk of infectious diseases. This is occurring right outside our homes, affecting our daily lives," Behera explained.
The ongoing sanitation debacle in Friends Colony underscores urgent calls for improved waste management systems and greater accountability from municipal authorities to safeguard public health and community well-being in Cuttack.
