Young Woman Undergoes Rare Heart Surgery for Life-Threatening Aortic Aneurysm
Rare Heart Surgery Saves Young Woman from Aortic Rupture

A 21-year-old woman from Solapur, who had been experiencing chest pain, breathlessness, and severe fatigue for nearly a year, underwent a complex heart surgery in Pune after doctors discovered a life-threatening enlargement in her main artery that could have ruptured at any moment.

Diagnosis of a Rare Condition

Doctors at Sahyadri Surya Hospital diagnosed her with a large aortic aneurysm, a balloon-like swelling in the aorta — the primary blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. While such aneurysms are typically seen in older adults, doctors said it was rare in someone so young. In her case, the aorta had expanded to 6.8 cm, more than three times its normal size, significantly increasing the risk of rupture.

Emergency Surgery and Procedure

She was admitted on March 23 under the care of cardiac surgeon Dr. Manoj Durairaj and underwent immediate surgery. “This was a high-risk condition, especially in someone so young. The aorta had enlarged dangerously, with a real risk of rupture. Prompt intervention was critical,” Dr. Durairaj said.

The surgical team performed a Bentall procedure, a complex operation used in cases involving severe damage to the aorta and related heart structures. During the procedure, doctors replaced the damaged aortic valve, repaired the enlarged section of the aorta using an artificial tube-like graft, and reconnected the coronary arteries.

Risks and Recovery

Hospital officials said the surgery involved risks including major bleeding and stroke. “The patient’s young age was a positive factor, but the procedure required very precise perioperative management,” said cardiac anaesthetist Dr. Shantanu Shastri.

The woman showed steady recovery after surgery and was discharged on March 30, about a week later. “The case was being reported now as doctors had monitored the patient over the past six weeks following surgery and found her recovery to be satisfactory,” said a hospital representative.

Medical Advice and Awareness

Dr. Durairaj emphasized that symptoms like chest pain, breathlessness, and unexplained fatigue should not be ignored, even among younger individuals. “Early diagnosis and timely treatment can be lifesaving,” he added.

This case highlights the importance of awareness regarding aortic aneurysms, which can affect individuals of any age. Prompt medical attention can prevent fatal outcomes.
