Shiv Sena MP Flags Welfare Gaps and Healthcare Shortcomings in Thane

Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske has raised critical concerns regarding the delivery of welfare benefits and healthcare support in Thane, urging authorities to bridge existing gaps and ensure equitable access for all citizens. In a recent development, Mhaske has called for stronger financial protection mechanisms to safeguard vulnerable populations from falling into debt due to medical emergencies.

Addressing Imbalances in Welfare Scheme Implementation

In a letter dated February 2, MP Mhaske directed Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao to take immediate action to ensure that all eligible beneficiaries receive the benefits they are entitled to under various welfare schemes. The letter emphasized the need for proper scrutiny and efficient allocation of resources to prevent disparities in access.

According to official data for the 2025–26 period, applications for several schemes under the Social Development Department have exceeded prescribed targets, while others have seen fewer applicants than budgeted. This imbalance poses a significant challenge, as it may lead to unused funds in some schemes and denial of benefits to eligible applicants in others.

Overview of Key Welfare Initiatives

The Women and Child Welfare Department administers 12 schemes, including:

  • Marriage assistance for daughters of widowed or divorced women
  • Rehabilitation support for single women
  • Welfare measures for the transgender community

Additionally, schemes for persons with disabilities encompass:

  • Education and sports scholarships
  • Livelihood aid
  • Medical assistance
  • Unemployment allowance
  • Old-age financial support

To address the current discrepancies, MP Mhaske has instructed the civic administration to plan and allocate available funds judiciously. This strategic approach aims to ensure that all eligible applicants can benefit from these schemes, thereby promoting social equity and financial security.

Advocating for Enhanced Healthcare Coverage

Separately, during a session in the Lok Sabha, MP Mhaske called for substantial improvements in healthcare coverage for road accident victims. He proposed increasing the cashless treatment coverage from the current Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh and extending the ICU limit from seven days to at least 25 days.

"Extending ICU limits and increasing coverage will ensure critical patients receive full treatment and prevent families from going into debt," Mhaske stated, highlighting the humanitarian necessity of these revisions.

Citing hospital data that indicates severe trauma cases often require up to 25 days of intensive care, Mhaske argued that the existing provisions under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways scheme are inadequate. The proposed enhancements are seen as crucial steps toward providing comprehensive medical support and alleviating the financial burden on affected families.

Moving Forward: A Call for Action

The dual focus on welfare scheme equity and healthcare reform underscores MP Mhaske's commitment to addressing systemic issues in Thane. By advocating for both immediate administrative adjustments and long-term policy changes, he aims to create a more inclusive and protective environment for all residents.

As authorities consider these recommendations, the emphasis remains on ensuring that no eligible individual is left behind and that healthcare services are accessible and affordable, particularly in times of crisis.
