Woman in Bahraich Allegedly Cuts Own Abdomen During Labour, Delivers Baby Girl

In a shocking incident from Nandwal village in Bahraich district, a 34-year-old woman allegedly cut open her own abdomen with a knife on Thursday after being unable to bear intense labour pain, in a desperate attempt to deliver her baby. The woman, identified as Nankai Kumari, was living alone at the time, as her husband, Badkau, had passed away six months ago following a prolonged illness, leaving her to care for their four sons: Niwas (16), Diwan (12), Ravi (8), and Rohan (5).

Desperate Act Amid Severe Pain

According to police reports, on Thursday around 1:30 pm, Nankai began experiencing severe labour pain. Her children had gone out to play in the village, and no other adult was present at home. Neighbours reported hearing her screams of agony, highlighting the dire situation.

Unable to endure the suffering, she allegedly picked up a vegetable-cutting knife from the kitchen and inflicted a deep wound on her abdomen. Blood spread across the room, and her condition deteriorated rapidly. Baundi SHO TN Maurya stated that villagers, alarmed by her cries, rushed to the house and found her grievously injured, with her intestines reportedly protruding from the wound.

Emergency Response and Delivery

The villagers immediately arranged for an ambulance, and she was taken to a local Community Health Centre (CHC). Despite the severe abdominal injury, doctors conducted an emergency normal delivery, and she gave birth to a healthy baby girl at 2:30 pm. However, due to the critical nature of her wound, she was referred to the district hospital for further treatment.

District hospital CMS NN Tripathi confirmed that Nankai had inflicted a deep abdominal wound with a sharp knife and was referred to Lucknow in a critical condition. After initial treatment failed to stabilise her, she was shifted to the KGMU Trauma Centre in Lucknow for advanced medical care.

Newborn and Family Situation

Doctors Rajesh Sonkar and Shivam Mishra, who attended to her in the emergency ward, reported that the woman sustained severe abdominal injuries. They confirmed that the newborn girl was stable and has been admitted to the SNCU ward of Bahraich district hospital for observation. Her mother, Neeta, accompanied her in the ambulance and is currently caring for the newborn.

Social Media and Community Reaction

A video purportedly showing the woman on a stretcher has surfaced on social media, in which she can allegedly be heard saying that she cut open her abdomen due to the intense pain. The incident has left residents of the area deeply shocked and concerned, raising questions about access to emergency healthcare and support for vulnerable individuals in rural areas.

This tragic event underscores the extreme measures some may resort to in moments of unbearable pain and isolation, highlighting the need for robust medical and social support systems.
