The National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in Ahmedabad has partnered with Zydus Hospital to advance research in clinical toxicology. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Wednesday, marking a significant step in enhancing emergency healthcare through rapid poison detection.
MoU Details
The collaboration will function under NFSU's Centre for Emergency Toxicology (CET). Professor S O Junare represented NFSU, while Dr Chaitasy Mehta signed on behalf of Zydus Hospital. The CET is dedicated to assisting medical professionals by enabling quick detection of poisons, thereby managing emergencies and improving healthcare outcomes.
Scope of Research
Dr Jayesh Trivedi from Zydus Hospital explained that while sample collection will occur at the hospital, analysis will be conducted at the university under the forensic toxicology branch. The research will cover a range of poisons, including organophosphates, drugs, and heavy metals. It will also facilitate alcohol estimation and drug abuse screening from urine, blood, and hair samples.
Addressing Poisoning Cases
This discipline is expected to address cases involving suspected poisoning or those with a medico-legal angle. The Ahmedabad city police handle numerous poisoning cases annually, some resulting in suicide attempts and deaths. In a recent case involving the deaths of two girls in Chandkheda, forensic toxicology analysis was crucial, with blood samples collected from the parents.
This partnership aims to strengthen the response to such incidents, providing timely and accurate toxicological analysis to support medical and legal proceedings.
