A significant fire erupted at a pharmaceutical warehouse near the Jodhpur BRTS bus stand in Ahmedabad on Monday, leading to the destruction of medicines and medical equipment and prompting an extensive firefighting response. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
Details of the Blaze
According to officers from the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services, the fire started in units operated by Atlantis Pharma Pvt Ltd, located in Block C of the Saptadeep Goldcoin Building at Jodhpur Crossroads. The flames rapidly spread from the ground floor to the second floor of the commercial premises, generating thick, dense smoke that engulfed the entire structure.
Four fire tenders from the Prahladnagar and Bodakdev fire stations were dispatched to the scene immediately after the fire control room received an emergency call. Firefighters encountered significant difficulty entering the premises due to the heavy smoke inside the warehouse.
Firefighting Efforts
Officers stated that window panes had to be broken, and a portion of the upper wall was dismantled to allow the smoke to escape. Fire personnel continued ventilation work for several hours even after the flames were brought under control.
A fire officer confirmed that employees and other individuals present on the lower floor of the pharmaceutical agency managed to evacuate safely before the fire intensified.
Safety Compliance Under Scrutiny
Civic officials noted that the building had been regularized under the Gujarat Regularization of Unauthorized Development Act (GRUDA) of 2011 in 2014. Authorities are now examining whether the warehouse complied with the fire safety requirements applicable to commercial godowns.
The incident has raised concerns about fire safety standards in commercial properties, and further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess any lapses in safety protocols.
