Kodagu Survey Finds 5,602 Stray Dogs; Sterilization Centers

Officials from the animal husbandry and veterinary sciences department have completed a survey in Kodagu district. They identified 5,602 stray dogs during this effort.

Survey Details and Dog Population

Lingaraju, the deputy director of animal husbandry, provided key figures. He stated that Kodagu district has an estimated total dog population of around 42,000. Out of this total, the survey confirmed 5,602 as strays.

Breakdown by Taluk

The survey results show a clear distribution across different taluks in Kodagu:

  • Ponnampet taluk recorded the highest number with 1,819 stray dogs identified across its gram panchayats.
  • Somwarpet taluk followed with 1,480 stray dogs.
  • Kushalnagar had 925 stray dogs.
  • Virajpet reported 740 stray dogs.
  • Madikeri taluk had 638 stray dogs.

Government Response and Sterilization Plans

To tackle the stray dog issue, the Urban Development Cell attached to the Kodagu district administration is taking action. They have issued tenders to establish centers for street dog management.

These centers will operate within the limits of Madikeri City Municipal Council, town municipalities, and town panchayats. The primary goal is to sterilize street dogs and house them as part of population control measures.

Specific Locations for Centers

Basappa, the project director of the Urban Development Cell, clarified the locations. Tenders have been invited to set up these centers in:

  1. Madikeri City Municipal Council
  2. Virajpet
  3. Kushalnagar Municipality
  4. The town panchayats of Somwarpet
  5. The town panchayats of Ponnampet

This initiative aims to reduce the stray dog population effectively. Officials hope it will improve public safety and animal welfare in the region.
