Couple Alleges Medical Negligence After Gauze Left in Body

A couple has filed a complaint of medical negligence after a large surgical gauze was left inside a woman during childbirth at a Dongri hospital in Mumbai. The incident occurred recently, and the Pydhonie police have recorded statements from the family. They are now awaiting medical reports and the opinion of JJ Hospital's medical board before proceeding further. The family has also alleged a cover-up by the operating gynaecologist.

Details of the Incident

On May 9, Shams Ali Sayed and his wife, residents of Dongri, welcomed a baby girl. However, within days, the new mother developed a fever and body aches. The couple consulted the operating gynaecologist, Dr Anam Syed, who prescribed antibiotics. When her condition did not improve, stronger antibiotics were prescribed on May 21. On May 28, the family took her to Habib Hospital, where Dr Anam also consults. An assistant ordered scans, and the family was told it was a minor infection.

Alleged Consent Irregularities

Shams Ali Sayed claimed that he was asked to sign a consent form for an operation to remove pus that had accumulated. He alleged that anaesthesia was administered even before he signed the form. Losing trust in the doctor, he moved his wife to Saifee Hospital, where doctors retrieved a surgical gauze. His wife remains under treatment.

Response from Medical Professionals

Dr Anam Syed refused to comment, citing the medico-legal nature of the case. Habib Hospital denied all allegations, stating that due consent was obtained prior to all procedures.
