Ludhiana Veterinary University Unveils Two Ready-to-Eat Nutritious Food Items

In a significant advancement for nutritional science, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) in Ludhiana has launched two innovative ready-to-eat functional foods: G-E-M Balls and Core-3 Energy Delight. These products, developed by combining traditional ingredients like egg, milk, and nutrient-rich millets, promise to deliver balanced nutrition for diverse age groups.

Fusion of Tradition and Modern Science

The name G-E-M stands for Ghee-Egg-Millet, symbolizing a fusion of time-honored dietary components with contemporary nutritional needs. According to Nitin Mehta, head of the Department of Livestock Products Technology, these items are designed as complete food solutions. "The products offer a balanced combination of protein, energy, and essential nutrients. They are functional, nutritious, and ready-to-eat, perfect for health-conscious individuals across all age groups," he explained.

Nutritional Profile and Benefits

Both products boast a dense nutritional profile, making them suitable for children in growth stages, fitness enthusiasts, professionals, and the elderly. Here are the key specifications:

  • G-E-M Balls: Contain 21-23% protein, 18-20% fat, and 2.5-3.25% minerals.
  • Core-3 Energy Delight: Offers 20-22% protein, 16-18% fat, and 2-3% minerals.

Energy values range between 380–425 kcal per 100g, ensuring a high-energy snack or meal supplement. Mehta emphasized their versatility, stating, "They can be consumed as healthy snacks, meal supplements, or even integrated into school nutrition programs. Their travel-friendly nature makes them ideal for busy lifestyles."

Positive Reception and Future Plans

The products were showcased at the recent Pashu Palan Mela held at the veterinary university, where they received encouraging feedback from visitors. "The public response was positive during tasting sessions. We are now working on standardizing their shelf life to make them commercially viable," Mehta added.

Once shelf life standardization is complete, the products will be available at the veterinary university outlet. Officials have plans to transfer the technology for wider adoption, which is expected to benefit livestock farmers and those involved in agriculture, as millets form a key component of the formulations.

Supporting Sustainable Food Systems

By integrating millets—known for their resilience and nutritional richness—into mainstream food products, these innovations align with India's national push towards millet promotion. Mehta highlighted, "The products are not just about nutrition; they are about supporting farmers and encouraging sustainable food systems." This initiative represents a step forward in blending agricultural sustainability with modern dietary solutions, potentially transforming snack options for health-aware consumers nationwide.
