Kerala Government Unveils Major Renovation of Chitranjali Studio to Boost Film Industry

In a significant move to elevate the state's cinematic capabilities, the Kerala government has inaugurated Phase I of a comprehensive renovation project at Chitranjali Studio in Thiruvananthapuram. Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cherian announced on Wednesday that the initiative aims to transform the studio into a world-class film production center with cutting-edge facilities.

Historic Studio Gets a Modern Makeover

Chitranjali Studio, which began operations in 1980, has been a cornerstone of Malayalam cinema, hosting the production of numerous classic films. The renovation project, valued at Rs 150 crore, is designed to upgrade the studio to global standards, marking a new chapter in the technological growth of the regional film industry.

Minister Cherian emphasized that this development addresses the historical dependency of Malayalam cinema on the Madras film industry, which prompted the establishment of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation. The renovation is seen as a strategic step towards self-reliance and innovation in filmmaking.

Phase I Completion and Future Plans

The first phase of the project, approved by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) with an allocation of Rs 67.17 crore, has been successfully completed. Key facilities developed include:

  • An administration block for streamlined operations
  • A digital intermediate building for post-production work
  • An equipment storage center to house advanced gear
  • A substation to ensure reliable power supply
  • Internal roads for improved accessibility

In the coming months, the studio will see the addition of several state-of-the-art features, such as a Dolby Atmos mixing theatre, dubbing suite, Foley studio, pre-mix suite, and DI suites. The project also encompasses a green mat shooting floor, modern storage systems, and enhanced firefighting mechanisms to ensure safety and efficiency.

Honoring the Legacy of Malayalam Cinema

During the inauguration, Minister Cherian also unveiled a bronze statue of J C Daniel, widely regarded as the father of Malayalam cinema, at the studio premises in Thiruvallam. This gesture underscores the government's commitment to preserving the rich heritage of the industry while propelling it into a future of technological advancement.

The renovation of Chitranjali Studio is expected to attract filmmakers from across India and beyond, positioning Kerala as a premier destination for film production. With its upgraded infrastructure, the studio is set to foster creativity, support local talent, and contribute significantly to the economic and cultural landscape of the state.
