House of the Dragon Season 3 Promises 'Craziest' Battle of the Gullet

The highly anticipated third season of 'House of the Dragon' is set to deliver an all-out war, with cast and creators teasing what could become one of the 'craziest' episodes in television history. Set nearly two centuries before the events of 'Game of Thrones', the series chronicles the brutal Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. After two seasons of buildup, Team Black and Team Green finally clash, plunging Westeros into chaos.

Battle of the Gullet to be 'Craziest' Episode

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, series co-creator and showrunner Ryan Condal teased that the infamous Battle of the Gullet will be 'arguably the craziest episode of television ever made.' Emma D'Arcy, who leads the series as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, added, 'The series this time around starts at 60 miles an hour. We're finally watching a war that has been building for two seasons.' D'Arcy noted the raised bar and expressed a competitive drive to meet it. The show returns on June 21.

Ewan Mitchell, whose character Aemond Targaryen currently sits on the Iron Throne, promised, 'It's all-out war. It's just a blitz straight out of the gate.'

About the Battle of the Gullet

The Battle of the Gullet is expected to be the centerpiece of the premiere episode. This sequence adapts one of the bloodiest naval conflicts from George R.R. Martin's 'Fire & Blood' and reportedly took four years to develop for the screen. Condal explained, 'To try to tell this story without doing the Gullet would be trying to film 'Lord of the Rings' without the Battle of Helm's Deep. If we were gonna do it, we had to do it right.'

The battle will feature Admiral Sharako Lohar, played by Abigail Thorn, leading the Triarchy fleet in an attempt to break House Velaryon's blockade of the Gullet. 'She's Captain Ahab in this episode. She's on a quest for her white whale,' Thorn said. The massive conflict unfolds across sea and sky as dragons join the fight, with characters like Harry Collett's Prince Jacaerys Velaryon and Bethany Antonia's Lady Baela Targaryen taking to the battlefield on their dragons. The battle was also teased in the trailer released earlier this month.

'House of the Dragon' to End After Season 4

Condal also confirmed that the series is still expected to conclude with Season 4. 'I can't speak for everybody else involved with the show and HBO and all that, but, yes, that is very much my plan,' Condal said.
