Sufi Singer Ustad Puran Shahkoti Dies at 74 in Jalandhar

The world of Indian Sufi music has lost a revered figure with the passing of Ustad Puran Shahkoti. The 74-year-old maestro breathed his last in the early hours of Monday in Jalandhar. He had been unwell for some time and was admitted to a hospital late on Sunday night.

A Life Dedicated to Sufi Music

Born in the town of Shahkot, Puran Shahkoti rose to become its most celebrated son. He was widely recognized not just as a performer but as a masterful teacher who shaped the careers of several highly successful singers. Despite his disciples achieving great fame, Shahkoti himself remained steadfastly devoted to the pure discipline of Sufi singing, shunning materialistic pursuits throughout his life.

Legacy Through His Disciples

The profound impact of Ustad Puran Shahkoti's teaching is evident in the stellar careers of his students. His most prominent disciples include:

  • Hans Raj Hans, the noted singer and former MP.
  • Hasbir Jassi, the popular vocalist.
  • Sabarkoti, another respected singer.
  • Master Salim, his own son.

A Teacher of Life and Music

In an emotional tribute to his guru, Hans Raj Hans shared his profound grief and admiration with the media. He described Shahkoti as "a singers' singer" and credited him for his entire success. "He not just trained me in music but also taught a lot about life, including how to converse. He was more than a singer or a musician. He was very clear about his philosophy of life," Hans stated.

Recounting a poignant final conversation, Hans revealed, "I was away in Canada and a few days back he said to me, 'Would you see me while alive or later,' and I instantly returned." He emphasized the maestro's unwavering principles, noting that while his students enjoyed material success, Shahkoti "never went after materialistic gains and remained a true Sufi singer," content with a simple and happy life.

The passing of Ustad Puran Shahkoti marks the end of an era for the Sufi music tradition in Punjab. He leaves behind a rich legacy of spiritual music and a generation of artists who will continue to carry forward his teachings and soulful philosophy.
