Dhurandhar: The Revenge's Extreme Violence Edited for Final Release
Dhurandhar: The Revenge has become a major topic of conversation since its premiere, with audiences discussing not only its compelling narrative and performances but also its intense and violent action sequences. Now, action director Aejaz Gulab has provided exclusive insights into the film's creation process, revealing surprising details about the original vision versus the final product.
Original Version Contained Far More Graphic Content
Aejaz Gulab disclosed that director Aditya Dhar actively encouraged the team to design extremely violent and intense action sequences during production. He explained that the initial version of the film contained significantly more graphic content than what ultimately appeared in theaters and on streaming platforms.
"We had shot all the brutality in detail, but what you see in the film is just 60%," Gulab told Hindi Rush. "Since we're in the OTT era and children may eventually watch it, we had to tone it down."
Director's Creative Freedom Led to Extreme Action
Gulab elaborated on how Aditya Dhar pushed the creative boundaries, stating, "Aditya Dhar gave us full freedom. He said, 'Aejaz bhai, think as brutally as you can. Kill in the most intense ways you can imagine.' And we did exactly that, while he added his directorial touch."
This creative freedom resulted in some of the film's most memorable sequences, though many were ultimately scaled back for the final release.
Improvised Scenes and Demanding Climax
Several of the film's most striking sequences were actually improvised during filming. Gulab recalled a key scene involving debris that was created spontaneously on set, demonstrating the team's adaptability and creativity.
The climax sequence proved especially challenging, running for over 30 minutes and requiring extensive preparation. The masjid sequence alone involved six days of rehearsals followed by 14 days of shooting. Maintaining continuity throughout this extended sequence presented significant challenges, requiring detailed coordination across all departments including hair, makeup, and costumes to ensure consistency across shots.
Actors Pushed to Physical Limits
Lead actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Rampal pushed themselves to their physical limits during production. The action director revealed that both actors sustained multiple injuries while filming a particularly demanding chain-fight sequence. Although rubber chains were used for safety, they still caused considerable pain.
Despite these injuries, both actors continued performing without interruption, even during rehearsals. Their unwavering commitment contributed significantly to the authenticity and intensity of the final action scenes.
Global Box Office Achievement
Beyond its action sequences, Dhurandhar: The Revenge has achieved remarkable global success. The film topped the US box office on its opening day, marking a significant milestone for Indian cinema.
Music composer Ricky Kej praised this achievement, writing, "Dhurandhar: The Revenge becomes the first Indian film in history to hit no. 1 on the USA Box Office! Beating every Hollywood film. Hats off to Aditya Dhar and team. This is one of the greatest milestones ever for Indian cinema. Truly breaking cultural and geographical barriers."
Kej also highlighted Ranveer Singh's impact, stating, "Everyone said that the Super-Star era has ended. Now we have a new certified global superstar: Ranveer Singh. And he deserves every bit of this success."
The film's combination of carefully crafted action, despite being significantly edited down from its original vision, and its global box office performance has solidified its position as a landmark production in contemporary Indian cinema.
