Surat: In a remarkable achievement, all 11 inmates who appeared for the Class 12 board examination from Lajpore Central Jail this year successfully passed, resulting in a 100 percent pass rate. This accomplishment underscores the jail administration's dedicated efforts to ensure that inmates have access to education and are not deprived of their right to learn.
Results and Top Performer
The results were declared on Monday, bringing joy to the inmates and jail officials alike. Among the examinees, undertrial prisoner Mohsin Farooq Sheikh emerged as the top scorer, securing 59 percent marks. The group included four convicted prisoners and seven undertrials, all of whom cleared the exams conducted during the February-March 2026 academic session.
Education Initiative
Lajpore jail superintendent Shripal Sheshma highlighted that the education initiative is designed to prepare inmates for successful reintegration into society after their release. He stated that the program ensures inmates are not deprived of their right to education and are better equipped to lead productive lives post-incarceration.
Special Exam Centre and Support
A special examination centre was established within the jail premises in coordination with the education department to facilitate the process. Officials attributed the success to several factors, including regular classes, provision of proper study material, doubt-clearing sessions, and continuous academic guidance provided by jail staff. The supportive environment helped inmates focus on their studies despite the challenging circumstances.
Broader Context
This achievement comes amid a busy electoral season, with results for the 2026 elections being announced across multiple states. However, the focus in Surat remains on this inspiring story of second chances and the transformative power of education within the correctional system.
