In a significant post-pandemic rebound, the University of Mumbai is set to award a remarkable 577 doctoral degrees at its annual convocation scheduled for January 17. This figure marks a powerful recovery from the slump experienced during the Covid-19 years and sets a new benchmark for research output at the venerable institution.
A Sharp Rise After Pandemic Challenges
The number of PhDs to be conferred this year represents a nearly 44 per cent increase compared to the 401 doctorates awarded in 2023. More importantly, it surpasses the numbers from even the pre-pandemic era. The university had awarded 507 PhDs back in 2018, but the subsequent years saw a worrying decline, hitting a low of just 153 in 2021. The challenges of lockdowns, laboratory access, and fieldwork disruptions during the Covid-19 pandemic were widely believed to be the primary cause of this drastic drop.
While completions began a gradual climb after 2021, the current academic year is the first time the annual tally has convincingly crossed the 500-mark again, signaling a full and robust recovery. University officials have also indicated that the final count of 577 is provisional and may increase further by the time the convocation ceremony is held.
Breakdown of Degrees and Distinguished Chief Guest
The 577 successful candidates come from a diverse range of academic disciplines. The Faculty of Science and Technology leads the pack with 256 PhDs, followed by Commerce and Management with 144. The Faculty of Humanities will see 106 scholars receiving their doctorates, while Interdisciplinary Studies accounts for 71 awards.
The convocation will be graced by Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, who will serve as the Chief Guest and deliver the convocation address to the graduating scholars and the university community.
University Leadership Credits Focused Initiatives
Commenting on this impressive turnaround, the Vice Chancellor of Mumbai University, Dr. Prof. Ravindra Kulkarni, attributed the success to the institution's sustained strategic efforts. He stated that the notable rise in PhD enrolment and completion reflects the university's commitment to strengthening research excellence and aligning with global academic standards.
Dr. Kulkarni highlighted several key initiatives that have fostered a more supportive research ecosystem:
- The establishment of a dedicated Research and Development Cell.
- The implementation of a University Department Ranking Framework to encourage quality.
- A series of targeted research promotion activities for scholars and faculty.
These measures, according to the administration, have collectively created an environment conducive to high-quality research, enabling scholars to complete their rigorous doctoral programs successfully. The upcoming convocation on January 17 stands as a testament to the resilience of the academic community and the strategic focus of India's premier universities on advancing knowledge and innovation.
