Lucknow University Establishes Two Prestigious Gold Medals to Foster Academic Achievement
The executive council of Lucknow University has given its official approval for the creation of two new gold medals, designed specifically to promote and reward outstanding academic performance among students. This significant initiative underscores the university's ongoing commitment to nurturing scholarly excellence and competitive spirit within its academic community.
Prof SJH Abdi Gold Medal for MA English Excellence
According to university spokesperson Mukul Srivastava, the first of these honors is the Prof SJH Abdi gold medal, which will be awarded annually starting from the academic session 2025-26. This prestigious award will be presented to the student who secures the highest marks in the MA English program at Canning College, a constituent college of Lucknow University.
In the event of a tie where multiple students achieve identical top scores, the medal will be awarded to the candidate with higher marks specifically in the final semester examination, ensuring a clear and fair selection process.
The medal has been instituted in loving memory of Prof SJH Abdi, a distinguished scholar and academic who made substantial contributions to the field of English literature in India. Prof Abdi was notably the founder of the Society for the Promotion of Indian English Literature, an organization dedicated to advancing literary studies and cultural exchange. The medal was generously established by his wife, Nishat Akhtar Abdi, as a lasting tribute to his legacy and scholarly impact.
Chandramani Singh Gold Medal for Jyotir Vigyan Scholars
The second new award is the Chandramani Singh gold medal, which will be presented annually to the postgraduate student who achieves the highest marks in the Jyotir Vigyan examination. This medal has been instituted by Deepak Singh in memory of his late father, Chandramani Singh, honoring his life and values through this academic recognition.
University Leadership Emphasizes Motivational Impact
Lucknow University Vice-Chancellor Prof Jai Prakash Saini expressed strong support for these new initiatives, highlighting their potential to inspire students. "The introduction of these new gold medals will significantly strengthen students' enthusiasm and competitive spirit for academic excellence," stated Prof Saini. "They will also support and enhance the university's long-standing tradition of motivating learners to achieve their highest potential, fostering a culture of scholarly pursuit and recognition."
These medals are expected to serve as powerful incentives, encouraging students across disciplines to strive for academic distinction while honoring the memories of notable individuals associated with the university's heritage.
