In a significant move aimed at blending academic rigor with holistic wellbeing, the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) has officially commenced the construction of a dedicated centre for yogic sciences. The institute also announced a generous scholarship programme for deserving students.
A Foundation for Holistic Student Development
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Dr Ishan Avdhoot Shivanand Centre for Yogic Sciences and Holistic Development was held on Monday, January 6, 2026. The event marks a concrete step by the premier institute to address the growing mental health challenges faced by students in top-tier educational environments.
The ceremony was led by IIT-Ropar Director Rajeev Ahuja. Key attendees included mental health researcher Dr Ishan Shivanand, after whom the centre is named, Atharva Poundarik, head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and noted cardiologist Dr Bindukumar Kansupada.

The proposed centre is designed to be a comprehensive hub for wellness activities and research. It will feature multipurpose halls dedicated to a variety of practices and programmes.
- Yoga and meditation sessions

- Mental health counselling services
- Research collaborations focusing on holistic, non-pharmaceutical interventions
The institute stated that the initiative seeks to promote holistic health, mental wellness, and spiritual development on campus through scientifically validated practices. The goal is to position student wellbeing as a pillar equally important to academic excellence.
Ten Fully Funded Scholarships for Underprivileged Youth
Parallel to the centre's launch, IIT Ropar and Dr Shivanand jointly unveiled the Dr Ishan Shivanand Scholarship for Gifted Youth. This scheme is a major outreach effort aimed at supporting talented students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The scholarship will provide complete financial support to ten selected students. The breakdown includes five scholarships for undergraduate programmes and five for postgraduate studies.
The comprehensive scholarship package covers:
- Full tuition fees for the entire duration of the course.
- Accommodation expenses on campus.
- A stipend for living expenses.
- Access to all wellness and development programmes offered at the new Yogic Sciences Centre.
A Potential National Model for Integrated Education
IIT Ropar envisions this dual initiative as a pioneering model that could be replicated by other higher education institutions across India. By integrating evidence-based wellness support directly into the educational framework, the institute aims to create a more balanced and supportive environment for its students.
The move responds to an increasing recognition within the education sector that mental health support is crucial for sustaining academic performance and fostering all-round development. This project at IIT Ropar represents a tangible commitment to creating a future where educational excellence and personal wellbeing go hand in hand.
