IIT Jodhpur 2025: AI & Data Science Choices Surge 20%, CSE Remains Top Pick
IIT Jodhpur 2025: AI, Data Science see 20% surge in choices

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur has witnessed a significant shift in student preferences for its undergraduate programmes in 2025, with emerging technologies and traditional core disciplines both recording impressive growth. According to the latest Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) choice-count data, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) continues to be the institute's most sought-after programme. However, the spotlight is firmly on the remarkable surge in interest for cutting-edge fields like Artificial Intelligence.

CSE Holds Crown, But AI & Data Science is the Rising Star

The data for the 2025 academic year shows that CSE garnered 19,513 choices, a solid increase from 16,506 in 2024, marking an strong>18.22 per cent growth. This sustained dominance underscores the unwavering demand for core computing skills in software engineering and systems design. Yet, the story of the year is the explosive growth of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. This programme witnessed a staggering 20.17 per cent rise in choices, jumping from 14,233 last year to 17,104 in 2025. This sharp increase highlights the accelerating student interest in machine learning, data analytics, and interdisciplinary AI-led roles shaping the future.

Traditional Engineering Disciplines Show Robust Growth

Beyond the tech-centric programmes, several conventional engineering branches at IIT Jodhpur posted strong numbers, reflecting a balanced academic landscape. Civil and Infrastructure Engineering recorded one of the highest growth rates among traditional fields at 16.91 per cent, with choices rising from 8,598 to 10,052. This resurgence aligns with the national focus on massive infrastructure projects and sustainable, climate-resilient construction.

Other core branches also saw healthy increases:

  • Mechanical Engineering grew by 15.01%, from 12,091 to 13,906 choices.
  • Electrical Engineering saw a 14.05% rise, moving from 13,629 to 15,544 choices.
  • Chemical Engineering registered a 13.37% increase, from 9,859 to 11,177 choices.

This pattern indicates sustained student confidence in the enduring relevance of these foundational engineering disciplines in industrial processing, power systems, and advanced manufacturing.

New and Interdisciplinary Programmes Gain Traction

IIT Jodhpur's academic expansion was met with enthusiasm, as evidenced by the successful debut of its new Electronics Engineering undergraduate programme, which attracted 13,265 choices in its very first year. Furthermore, interdisciplinary and science-oriented programmes demonstrated steady gains, appealing to students seeking a blend of core science and engineering applications.

Materials Engineering grew by 14.99% (7,130 to 8,199 choices), and Bio Engineering rose by 12.66% (6,319 to 7,119 choices). The specialised science programmes also saw notable upticks: Chemistry with Specialisation increased by 16.42% and Physics with Specialisation grew by 13.70%.

The comprehensive JIC 2025 data paints a picture of an institute that is strengthening its appeal across the board. While CSE maintains its position as the most preferred choice, the meteoric rise of AI and Data Science signals a clear trend towards next-generation technologies. Simultaneously, the robust growth in civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, alongside successful new offerings, confirms IIT Jodhpur's diverse and evolving academic strength, catering to the multifaceted demands of India's future economy.
